Hi all
going to my first christmas party tonight as a sober person. I'm feeling pretty OK about it. I actually volunteered to be the DD for someone so I've made a committment there.
It is in a pub/bar but not much I can do about that - that's where all the parties are held of course.
I don't have any desire to drink at the moment but it will be the first time I've been in a drinking environment like that in quite some time.
Looking forward to a nice meal and good company. I'll let you guys know tomorrow how it goes.
Idgie.
PS I went to a meeting last night and talked to my sponsor as well, so I've prepared as best I can.
Hey Girlfriend,
I'm so proud of you and the great strides you have made. Pat yourself on the back girl! Hey the good thing is that you will be sober so you can make mental notes of all the drunk jackholes that are at the party. Have a great time and get all dolled up so you can have pictures to post for us....if you are so inclined!

Idg,
You're doing so good; your Higher Power has removed that obsession for you...just like He did for me and countless others.
Val,
"Jackhole" ~ OMG, I love that....that is going to be added to my vocabulary...not sure if that is a good thing, but I love it...lol! Oh, and thanks for the card!

Hey idgie
You will be amazed when you think of the night and how it went as i found out that for awhile even though i wasn't drinking a part of me did and still does goe into the zone when I'm at a pub, my vocabury can change and even the way i talk about things also a lot of my other addictions come out of hibernation when I'm near a pub so i have a mental get the fu#k out point that i stick to.
In our town all Xmas partys involve booze and pubs so at the start of my sobriety i tended to be a sober driver and hear the same stories 15 times and drunker on each version. Now i tend to show up say gidday and piss off early cause once they are drunk i have nothing in common with most of them apart from my bad habits.
But also most people can have a few beers and a good time and i am always looking at the picture with alkys eyes so sometimes i need to see the pain and fear in an active drinker to remember there but for the grace of god go i.
Light and love zac

Hi guys
thanks for all the advice and thoughts. The party went well. Now that I've put the glass down I can actually see LOL.
I was amazed that most people were actually not drinking and those that did were only dirnking very little. (in my group anyway). I didn't pay attention to anyone else in the pub.
Had a really nice meal, great conversation and all that. I did feel a bit antsy for a while, not because I wanted a drink I just wasnt feeling comfortable with myslf. But I just didn't dwell on it.
It was nice to actually be able to have a proper conversation with people and not be out of it.
I did enjoy myself but I still have quite a bit of work to do before I'm feeling entirely comfortable in those social situations. But all in all it was good.
cheers Idg.

Hi Idgie...the first few social gatherings can be tough...but I too realized most people didn't drink or drank very little...nothing like I would have LOL!....Now being around alcohol doesn't even bother me at all...only when people get sloppy drunk or repeat themselves repeatedly...and it is a big reminder of how I was...When people ask me if I would like a drink...I say no thank you...if the conversation goes further...I say I am either the DD or no I just don't drink....and that's that...
When I was new and had to be in a social situation that involved alcohol I had an early exit plan just in case or a friend I could call or my sponser...
I am glad you had a good time and congrat yourself....Love Gina
Edited to add: It seems like I got a job...but not one from sending a resume and not in my field or even a career job but for a builder...I will be organizing and doing his paperwork...it has flexible hours (which I need right now) and the pay is so/so but something is better than nothing and he seems like a nice guy to work for...he understands I am a mom and that my kids come first...I will hear for sure tomorrow...As for a career job...putting that on hold for a bit...Thanks again Idgie for all your help!

your welcome Gina
hope the job works out for you - then you'll be able to update your resume :).
I have another party on Saturday - but its in the afternoon so I don't think there'll be too much heavy drinking. But its a much bigger group this time.
I'm not driving anyone except myself to this one so I can leave early if I feel like I need to.
The good thing is, this is a party with people that I regularly do a non-drinking activity with anyway - hiking - so I'm used to dealing with them sober anyway.
thanks for all the support.

chalk me up for 3 sober Christmas parties now!! Including one at my house. Wow I had a really great time and once the party started I didn't even think about the fact that I wasn't drinking.
Hope everyone is having a great weekend.
