Cold turkey
Kel Richards writes:

When someone goes off drugs (especially heroin) by just ending their use without tapering off, and without drugs or other medical assistance, they are said to go cold turkey. In fact, by extension, giving up anything abruptly (without therapeutic assistance) is now called going cold turkey. In 1970 d*** Van Dyke starred in a movie called Cold Turkey about a small town that tried to win an offered $25 million dollars by giving up smoking completely (everyone in town) for 30 days. A neighbour of mine once made his kids give up television cold turkey by simply cutting the power cord. Those are all metaphorical extensions of the original meaning, but cold turkey always was a metaphor it was, from the beginning, picture language. It arose in the US in the 1920s (the earliest citation is from 1921) from a comparison between a drug addict undergoing withdrawal and a cold, dead turkey. Because of their bodys learned dependence on the drug withdrawal is like an illness and is marked by dead white skin, goose pimples and cold sweats. And all of these are said to make the withdrawing addict resemble a cold, dead, plucked turkey. (There is also an implied contrast with a warm, cooked, roasted turkey with its pleasant taste and smell.)

hope i don't piss anyone off with this
Thanks BA. I'd never heard that. Not sure I'll ever be able to say "cold turkey" in the same way again. lol M.
lmao... thanks ba... that can be true...
as far pissing some off... you gotta get to a point that a sense of humor is a good thing to have... being able to laugh at ourselves and see things in a new way is taking power in some sense away from out detractors...

anyway.. thanks...

Thanks ba, that question just kind of struck me the other day while reading posts. No matter how I looked at that word, nothing to explain it came to mind. Thanks to you and the wife for figuring it out. I got a kick out of that answer. Much love, Kat
I love it! Now if I could only get that image out of my head.....

Have a great day
