Cold Turkey

This is my 5th day. This is tough. I've been taking Lortabs for about nine years. The last three years I was taking 12+ a day. Jesus, its all I think about. Right now I'm taking Fioinal/codeine, but I'm done when I run out. This message board is really great because I have no one to talk to. It's amazing how these pills consumed my life, I'm sick of it. And I'm so depressed I can barely breathe.
It has to get better, right? I'm exhausted, I feel like sh*t, how long does it take to start feeling human again? I hate this.
Hi Terry,

I was taking hydro and Fiorinal #3 at the end of my run as well. The fatigue is a normal side-effect of getting off the Lortab. It does get better. One word of caution: if you've been taking high doses of the Fiorinal, be careful going c/t -- it is a benzo (with Tyl #3), and w/d can be more dangerous than from opiates. I was taking 90/month when I quit that and the hydro at the same time, and I don't remember experiencing worse side effects than others who were withdrawing from opiates only, but that was just me. Hang in, it really does improve with a little time -- and you get your life back! M.
have you started meeting?......... gets you out among people.... does worlds of good for your mood to social life to be around those that have 'been there'...

my two cents..
teresa..

Fironial/Codiene is not a benzo. Here is what it contains: Aspirin/butalbital/caffiene/codiene.

Butalbital is a barbituate.

If you quit them cold turkey you will experience withdrawal symptons as with any opiate such as codiene.

This med is used primarily to relieve headaches.
Sharon is right. My mistake. I would still advise extreme caution, though, as barbiturate w/d -- like benzo w/d -- can have more complicatrions than opiate withdrawal. This from a med website:

"The symptoms of barbiturate withdrawal (Phenobarbital in particular)
can be severe and have been known to cause death, usually by
cardiovascular collapse or cerebral hemorrhage. Minor withdrawal
symptoms may appear 8 to 12 hours after the last dose of
Phenobarbital.

Initial withdrawal symptoms usually appear in the following order:
anxiety, muscle twitching/cramps, headaches (sometimes called
withdrawal headaches or rebound headaches), chills, tremor of
hands and fingers, progressive weakness, dizziness, distortion in
visual perception, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, and orthostatic
hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure that occurs when a person
stands up). Basically, since barbiturate addiction is one of the
hardest addictions to break, if you can conjure up all the most
distasteful and horrific symptoms imaginable and make a list of them,
thats very similar to what a heavily addicted user might experience
if he were to attempt sudden and unassisted cessation.

Major withdrawal symptoms such as convulsions and delirium may occur
within 16 hours and last up to 5 days after abrupt cessation of this
drug. Intensity of withdrawal symptoms gradually declines over a
period of approximately 15 days but most experts agree that even the
worst heroin withdrawal is not so intense as bad barbiturate
withdrawal."
After reading what Sharon and None wrote...I would say to get off of the foirnal/3 as soon as possible and ONLY with the help of a doc.

Too scary and potentially fatal to do it on your own and chances are, you won't be successful. The w/d will be too painful and you'll end up taking the loracet or whatever to avoid it. Sorry, I know it's not what you want to hear..but after months of reading similiar stories, it's a fact.

Please call your doctor. And then let us know how you are.

Definately call your Doc. Your just substituting one pill for another which doesn't solve anything. Your still addicted to taking pills, doesn't matter if its Lortabs or codeine, etc. A pill is a pill is a pill.

Your best off to call you doc and tell him everything about your addicting. How long you've been taking them, how much, etc.

At some point you gotta swallow your pride and get help or you might end up dead trying.
Have taken Remeron the past 4 nights and am sleeping like a baby. No side effects to speak of (no problems with dry mouth or restless legs like the others have mentioned) and am only groggy first thing in the morning if I take it really late at night (after 11 pm). I am, however, awaiting to see an improvement in my depression. Hope it kicks in soon. Thanks for those who posted. The support here is great.
sorry - my reply got added to the wrong post by accident...
