Well, it's happened yet again. Last night two local teen boys, a junior and a sophomore, were in an alcohol and speed related car crash leaving one dead at the scene and the other facing a 12 hour spinal surgery today as he could not move his legs when he awoke this afternoon. They were out at 1am - well past junior operator hours - and on their way to pick up a friend's son who was sneaking out for a late night party. She's pretty shaken about her boy's close call, but doesn't know that he's sufficiently shaken by the death of two close friends.
Our very small town has had a teen driving fatality for 11 years in a row - sometimes more than one has died. Last night my older daughter said,"That could easily have been me when I was partying, we were always driving around wrecked." (She never had a license, but that never stopped her from driving around the other idiots who all thought they'd live forever.) My younger one isn't like that, but I still worry about other cars, other drivers.
So unnecessary, such a waste. So terribly, terribly sad.

How very sad and heartbreaking...I have 2 16yr old girls and Miranda, my junior, prays every start of a new school year to make it through the year with out having a memorial & a funeral for a classmate...So far, this year, she's attended two...the last one, last Sunday evening on the boy's 18th birthday, they were mourning his death, not celebrating his birthday....This time instead of alcohol and cars, it was steriods. What in the hell is steriods doing in our high schools and why in the hell is it so out of control....

(((((Hugs)))) right back, Stace. The steroids are how the young men stay on top in the extreme competition of high school sports. They are baaaaad news, especially for one so young. But it gets back to the whole immortality thing - they are going to live forever don'tcha know. I have a friend who is a competitive body builder, has been since the 80s when he was just a young'un. This guy took A LOT of 'roids and now his entire torso is covered with moles of all different sizes, so this body he worked so hard to bring to its pinnacle is now a source of shame for him. He won't even take off his shirt in a locker room anymore. Instead being in the show now, he trains others to participate in "clean" shows where all the athletes are tested before competing. He says the steroids changed his voice and his temper and made him paranoid.
I hate to see such young lives snuffed out by drugs and alcohol. All because they were so special that it couldn't happen to them =(
