Decisions, Decisions (off Topic)

What a lovely day........I do mean that I swear......
You know only this could happen to me, I put the computer on standby and it died.....Not only did it die, it went back in time to windows 98........Which hasn't been on it in years....
So now if my skills can't get me back in, which they haven't been able to so far......and I have typed every command know to man to get in. I will have to consider having someone retrive all the info and put it on a new computer, which I will probably get now anyway after this mess.....
So my question, has anyone done that, let the store shift stuff from your old to new computer.....I want my pictures, but with that data they try to retrieve emails.....I am sure you can imagine what is talked about in some of the emails on it........
And if someone knows while shifting the data can they even see the pictures, or mail, text files.......what not.....is it right in thier faces??????
Praying hard for a partitioned drive, which is how they better have put XP on it.......then with some luck and fancy typing, I can get back in and save what I want to CD.....

Looks to be a busier day than I thought....
Hope you all are having a good one.....
Love,
Tina
I'm not much of a computer wiz Tina, but I think that if you back up all of the stuff on your hard drive onto floppys, you can load a new computer yourself, unless of course any of the stuff you save is corrupted and then you would be loading bad stuff on your new computer. I guess letting the store do it for you would be safer and yes, they could access and read anything you have stored. Hopefully they don't have time to go through and read your personal stuff.

Glad it's nice where you are, I'm stuck inside today. This rain is getting really old. Where is SUMMER!????

Good luck with that one, Tina. I lost two years worth of stuff in a similar fashion awhile back. I ended up having to use my restore disc and everything went off into cyber space......which while upsetting I'd prefer than having anybody reading all that, lol. What do you think caused it to do that? I'm still wondering myself. Love, Kat
Tina,

No, they cant have that much time on their hands, if your worried just buy a new machine, and copy the drive over yourself, I will talk you through it if you want, its pretty easy. Just make sure your old machine is not SCSI (pronounced scuzzy) Its an interface like IDE, Your old machine is probably IDE though.

Best Regards,
Tom
Well if I can't get it out.....I think I will be taking a sledge hammer to the hard drive before it hits the trash can........Just cause I can't don't mean someone can't either.......Yes I don't trust anyone, especially with things that I hold in confidence or close to my heart.........

Kat......It is in the way you prompt your system to restore......you probably just did a dump and run, which would start you up like how you got it from the store......You usually get options to like search out missing and corupted files and just fix it....stuff like that.......Hard to explain........
If I had your computer in front of me I would take a stab at finding what you lost......Be surprised what is sitting on your hard drive after you swore you deleted it.
I know because when I had it upgraded to XP they told me they had an error and were sorry but they lost everything. I came home and searched for some of the stuff and starting finding it......I think they just didn't feel like doing thier job......I have never had anyone touch my computer since.

Well I am off for now, son is freaking I"m on his computer.......Like I got cooties or something. Hope everyone is having a good day.....Sorry about the rain Cowgirl and I hate to say spring is here and by Monday it looks like we might need to make sure the air conditioner is working........
Love,
Tina
Tom I can do it even if I can't get it booted.....
I am waiting now for a 98 disc to see if the drive is partitioned......if it is I might be able to get it running again.....
I've had computers crash and have a great repair man who I trust.... I just take it all to him & he transfers everything for me or fixes the computer so that I don't lose much in the first place.

Tina, yes.. You can physically take the drive out of the old machine and add it to the new machine, it will show up as a d drive (usually) from there copy all the info you want.

Regards,
Tom
Omg Tina, I just thought of the implications of that. I'm sure you are exactly right by the way, it did go back to the way it was when I got it from the store. That's it, I'm putting in my will that at my death my computer is to be destroyed, lol. I don't want my kids inheriting knowledge of their mom I'd rather they didn't have.....what a thought. Enjoy your nice weather, love, Kat
You make a good point Kat, even if you re format a drive, you can still get the info off it, its best to smash it with a hammer, making sure you break the platters inside........

Regards,
Tom
See now you know why I have the sledge on standby...........
Wonder what the neighbors will think watching me........

Thanks Tom good to know I can get it myself if all else fails.......
Well I'm sure leaving instructions for that to be done....lol. When you stop and think about it, our computers are extremely personal. Thanks Tom, love, Kat
