I have been posting mainly on the Friends and Family board, but I would also like some help from recovery alcoholics and get advice.
My husband is an alcoholic, has been for 15 years, through different attempts at cutting back and stopping sometimes, I let this horrible situation continue for way to long. He moved for a job about 2-1/2 years ago, best thing that happend to me (durning the week). Only came home on weekends.
Anyway, his drinking continued, my anger continued, he got a DUI finally. I thought that would be a wonderful thing. in CA it is a joke. The mandatory group counseling and attending 2 AA meetings. JOKE. He did his time, paid his fine and did actually quit for about 2 months (maybe?).
Then started up again, and also started using drugs, cocaine and possibly crank?? Found a broken light bulb, a butane lighter, pen pipe, and small bag, all within a couple months. Also lots of porn pictures on computer and printed out in brief case.
My questions is - Can a person with this much alcohol use in his past (he has been clean 2 weeks, ??? I really don't know) and drug use, can they recover from going to outpatient meetings 3 nights a week for 2 hours each for a period of 10 weeks? Or do they need Inpatient?
My counselor, my recovering addict son, many people, say outpatient is ok for some, but doesn't work unless they go through inpatient first. That they will not make it with just outpatient. Is this what you have found?
Hi Baseball Mom,
I was a very big drinker, for many years and Had tried giving up from time to time on my own, only to last 6 mths one time,
Then last year I decided that ,, that was it I want to stop this for good, health resons, money reasons and relationship reasons.
My doc wanted me to do an inhouse rehab, but that meant not going to work for 3 mths, completely out of the queation for me, as I have mortgage etc, and like my own bed!
So what my doc done was send me to a Alchol and Drug Assessment Unit at the Hospital in the city, this was a 3 mth course of one on one talking with a Psychologist, As I am a shift worker and due to our Goverment saving money, my Psychogist only was there 2 days a week so I had to go when ever I got the
chance some weeks I would miss out, it took me 4 1/2 mths to do the course, It worked it really has worked, I havent had a drink in 11 1/2 months now, I only have got 14 days to go and it will be one year,
So I belive that out patient works, but its really up to the person themselves if they want to stop,
Sorry for rambling on,
Ginge
Loinel Im coming to Sydney for work today or tomorrow, maybe meet for a coffee?? Im going to be in the Parramatta area, I will be there for 2 weeks ,,
take care Ginge

Hi there, I am a recovering alcoholic who drank for 28 years and also indulged in cocaine, so I'm an addict too. I only got sober when I was ready when I hit the bottom that I needed to...I got sober through working a 12 step program and I was and still am willing to go to any length for my sobriety. I try to go to a meeting on a daily basis since I was a daily drinker; they say put as much into your recovery as you did into your drinking and using...so I really try to hit a meeting everyday. So for me, I didn't go to inpatient or outpatient...I got sober in the rooms of AA. Good luck, oh btw, I'm in California and my 15 year old Daughter was brought home by the Police Sunday, she's facing a misdemeanor and possible felony...the Cops were pretty rough on her, and I'm glad.
Hi Baseball Mom
Alcoholism is a progressive Disease and active alcoholism never gets better it only gets worse .Us alcoholics cause the ones we love so much pain and mental torment .But I believe there is always hope.
Though I feel that the 4 weeks I spent in a rehab 14 plus years ago has been a solid foundation for me and I havent needed to drink or drug since that time others that where in there with me have relapsed.
This is not a competition to see who has had the most DUI s but I had several over a 20 year period and done the one or two AA meetings and the counselling all probably to no avail till the last. Well not to no avail somethings must have stayed with me.
I would go there to keep my wife of my back and hopefully persuade the judge to go easy on me, but in the back of my mind I was always going to drink again. I would always say to my wife that it would be different this time but how do you know when an alcoholic is lying its when they open there mouth.
I am getting a bit carried away here back to your question. I havent seen over the years a great result with real alcoholics just attending out patient. But there a couple of cases of do know of where people have stopped drinking by attending outpatients. I am only one person though and hopefully your husband will take something from the time he spends there. I am no authority and anything I say is only my opinion. It has worked for Ginge maybe it will work for your husband I will pray for you both. You sound as though you are looking after you which is good. Hope I havent confused you with all my babbling .God Bless LionelC
I do believe in the power of prayer.
Ginge do you have an email where I can send my phone number to you.It would be great to meet up with you.
