Getting off Methadone was a decision I made all my own, I was tired of being a slave to the pill , 10 years almost. First off I went and expressed this with my Doctor and he aggred to help me. He ended up giving me liquid form to measure accurately. I started at 80mg/day and each week would go down10 till I got to the last 20mg then by 5mg til 10mg and down 1mg a week x 5 weeks than 1/2 a week til none. I barely feel withdrawal. Had some leg pains and some diarrhea but nothing I couldnt help by taking maalox and advil. Still not fully back to my old energetic self but feeling better each day. It was something I put off for a very long time because of the scary withdrawal stories but if I had known this just takes time, motivation and effort. So it can be done easy and less painful than most stories indicate. Dont be scared just get help from your doc...getting the liquid is the best. If anyone wants someone to talk to about...I know exactly what your going thru. Good luck and remember theres a light at the end.

azgirl,
Wow! Thanks for that refreshing detox story!
Most of the ones we hear are full of being extremely uncomfortable! I am glad your wasn't as such. This board has had many stories of methadone detox and for the most part if the detox is done correctly, VERY SLOWLY, it can be done, if you have a plan in place and a doctors backing. Hopefully it will all be good for you from now on.

Amnails,
I have reduced my dose by 5mg per week to 0 currently, and during a previous detox, 1mg per week. (I am currently 90 days methadone free). I suffered the same withdrawal pains during each instance. The worse part for me was the insomnia, with lack of energy being 2nd. There were several "medications" that worked fairly well for me. The 1st was the supplement, L-Tyrosine, which is a supplement that can be purchased from almost anywhere. It basically is a non - essential amino acid that is a precursor of the neurotransmitter, dopamine. The 2nd was a prescription of doxepin, which is a tricyclic antidepressant. It is both a strong sleeping medicine and antidepressant that is completely non - addictive. When I slept more, I had much more energy. As I work as an engineer, this combo really helped preserve my alertness and critical thinking. However, each yday was a little better for me. I am at 90 days and feel great! Good luck!
