I am doing some research for a friend whose brother is a heavy user of marijuana and alcohol. I just have a few questions about marijuana abuse and addiction. I have some questions about marijuana use.
1. What symptoms of drug use indicate an addiction?
2. In your opinion, what is the best way for a loved one to reach out to the abuser?
3. How have you seen children affected by parental drug abuse?
4. How have you seen marijuana and alcohol affect users emotionally?
5. How prevalent do you think marijuana use is on campus?
6. The abuser receives money for drugs and alcohol from his girlfriend. Should the girlfriend completely stop financing his addiction?
7. What are some healthy habits (i.e. exercise) that could replace the perceived benefits of marijuana and alcohol (i.e. stress relief)?

I'm not an expert but I have started an advocacy website for addicts ... to end the shame and stigma of addiction. My experience is personal.
caulm
1. Progressive increase in frequency, amount or potency
2. "These are the changes I see in your behavior that concern me ......"
"I'm not angry with you because I understand that this is a pretty common problem. Would you like to talk about it."
"I know I can't control you but my understanding is that this is a progressive problem .... it may get worse. Please be honest with yourself and let me know if you would like my help."
Nagging, pleading, arguing, crying, begging, etc. only make the problem much worse, not better
3. Children with alcohol or drug use in the home are affected in so many ways, It can't be listed here! Emotional abandonment issues, trust issues, relationship issues, etc!
4. Alcohol and pot are two totally different things and have completely different effects. Obviously, the legalization of pot is a very hot topic these days! I personally am not opposed to that. I believe alcohol...the legal drug.....to be much more destructive to people's lives than pot. However, with that said, pot tends to inhibit productive behavior! LoL Especially with young users, it inhibits motivation.
5. HIGHLY prevalent
6. In most states, pot is still illegal. Illegal activity should never be condoned or financed in my opinion. If alcohol is being abused, which seems to be the case, the person who wishes to abuse the substance of choice needs to be held responsible for his own supply.
7. Again, I'm not sure why alcohol and pot are being referred to together. Other than being viewed by young people as the substances with the least effects, the effects themselves are completely different. For stress reduction, meditation is very beneficial. Yoga, swimming, weight lifting ... any exercise can help. Also, learning a hobby or picking an old one back up ... painting, music, blogging, anything creative....
Hope this helps! :-)
Take care!
