Has Anyone Tried St. Johns Root Or Valerian??

Hey guys good morning. Well going on day 23 feeling ok. When is the day that starts a new habit is it day 28??? Anyway I just reordered all my supplements and was wondering if anyone has taken St. Johns wort or Valerian root. I do take Gaba which is supposed to help with a calm mood but I can't tell you how bitchy I feel since I quit. I keep snapping at my kids and screaming at them. I had read that St Johns is natures Valium (although I never used valium) I was hoping that it would calm me down I hate feeling this pissy. I literally have to make myself not scream doing breathing and relaxation but when I am in the moment I lose it. Yesterday I finished cleaning the basement Oh my Gosh the dust was unbelievable I finished in four hours. I remember when I finished thinking I just did that without the help of pills Yahoo!!!
It is getting warmer here so I may take the kids out in the snow. I bought them an snow igloo snow paint and a snowman kit for Xmas it should be fun it is up to 35 degrees today a regular heat wave.

Dear Roxy,

First of all, give yourself big pats on the back!!!! Doesn't if feel great realizing that you CAN do the hard work without the help of pills? Expecially the mundane but necessary things....(don't look at MY basement LOL) You sound pretty dang good today Roxy! I tried Valerian Root a long time ago...I didn't stick with it though as I couldn't stand the smell of the capsules. I know dumb reason but they were really rank.

Be good to yourself, don't overdue. I don't know how old you are, but when I do a big job like cleaning the basement, I hurt like heck the next day lol...

Have a good one,

Jan

Please be careful what supplements you start to take. Give your body time to heal before you start self medicating with mood changing stuff. You don't know what they will do to you and they could make things worse. Sometimes we have to go thru moods and emotions that are unpleasant. They will pass, honey. Give it time.
hey roxy
i too have been curious about those supplements also but never purchased them because you are not supposed to take them if you are on an antidepressant. jewels
What helped me get through the worst of the mood swings was getting up every day and going to a meeting (didn't always make it every day, but I sure noticed the difference on the days I missed). That's what helped my mood.

Like Kat said, be careful of supplements. Our bodies do need to heal after all of that abuse over the years.

Take care

I think that the only time pills truly help depression is when it is chemically based. If that is the case, anti depressants work on fixing that balance or lack of. I have tried St.Johns Wort and it did nothing for me. Its just my feeling, but I think that those days I may feel depressed are not really chemically induced and so a pill such as St.Johns Wort (and perhaps a prescribed a/d) does not really have any effect. Ive never taken a prescribed a/d so I cant say how that would react on me. I just know that for ME, those days of feeling low dont last long but I find being busy, getting off the pity pot, does wonders. Some people DO need something to chemically balance them though and perhaps those people will get more of a benefit from St.Johns Wort or perhaps they need something prescribed. Its amazing how chemically different we all are. If my husband takes a tylenol pm, hes out like a light. When I have taken them, Im wired for the night. I hate them.
Roxy! Congratulations on 23 days! That is a miracle. No one said it would be easy.....in fact its not easy but you have come along way baby. 23 days is huge..that is a very long for a drug addict to refrain from doing what we do best.

So whats next? As you know you have to have a plan now...Roxy..this is crucial...please look into meeting and therapy. You will be amazed at how much easier it will be. I quit taking pills so many times to only relapse within weeks or months....I am clean now and its coming up on 5 months!

I do go to meetings and I have embraced them and all that they have to offer in my recovery. Recovery doesn't stop ever...you have to dig deep into your soul and get to the root of the evil and when you do...it is so amazing!

I haven't tried any supplements...funny how I could handfuls of pills without a second thought...but vitamins upset my stomach...how sick is that. I take a really good MultiVitamin Daily...or every other day or so when I think of it.

Wishing you best today...do something nice for yourself! Find a meeting!

I wouldn't mess around with anything right now...you know the drill...lots of water and some good hard exercise! Like cleaning your basement!
I was the same way with trying "natural health remedies", or vitamins. No problem swallowing 3 - 4 vicidons, but put a b-12 pill under my tongue? Heavens that scared me no end. Would it make me a speed demon? Heart race? etc. What I found though, was it did nothing.
Roxy, just take a steady does of self pride - you have alot to be proud of and alot to look forward to.
23 day is awesome! CONGRADULATIONS! I am not sure about the vitamins. I have been taking Centrum since I have been home from Detox, but I also have the panic attacks as well, and I did not have them before. The Dr. said that the reason that I am having the panic attacks is because my body is relying on that crutch (pain pills) and is freaking out and thats where the panic attacks come from. I hope that helps. I celebrated to when I did things for the first time without pills. :)

One day at a time
104 days clean
I have taken St John's Wort for years now - I take it in pill form and drink as tea - mainly to have something to drink that's not caffinated.

But I definately notice a difference if I stop taking it for a few days. Its not a whap you in the face sort of difference, its gradual and subtle but definate.

For me I find my mind doesn't race in circles so much and the committee in my head is quieter when I take it - I also don't have as many mood swings when I take it regularly.

The only side effect I know of it increased sun sensitivity so I'm realy careful to wear sunblock. Howver it does interact with some prescription medicines and because it has naturally occurring properties that are articificially contained in anti-depressant medicines you should definately consult a qualified person before taking it IF you are taking other meds.

That said, if you are not on other meds I really don't think it could hurt you to take it - but I am not a naturopath so its best to seek some advice before doing so.

It is not a cure all, nor a quick-fix pickme up - the changes are gradual and its like you'll realise suddenly that you have been feeling more level in your emotions after a while of taking it.

cheers Idgie

Hey honey

Your doing so great...im so proud of you, and so happy FOR you..

And yes..i think that the habit thing is 26 days.....so your almost there...addicted to your NEW HABIT of living healthy....lol

okay..please listen...ST JOHNS WORT acts just like the antidepressants Prozac or Zoloft..in the exact same manner( selective serotonin uptake inhibitor)

using ST JOHNS WORT WITH THESE DRUGS IS DANGEROUS..you can get something called SEROTONIN SYNDROME..( especially dangerous for seniors) but basically you can get confusion, sweaty, restless, anxious, restless and have muscles spasms and even seizures..

Taking st Johns with other types of antidepressants, like the Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, or the Tricilic antidepressants ALSO POSE THREATS TO YOUR HEALTH..just not as serious..

Of all the herbal supplements, St JOHNS WORT is one of the most serious, and in my opinion shouldn't even be on the shelf....honestly honey if you really research this herb. its way too Strong and has way too many contraindications to be taken...

It apparently weakens up to 50% OF ALL AND ANY medications, including drugs that treat heart and AIDS, meaning that the patient wont get the proper dosage they think they are getting...

These drugs include;

Birth Control
Digoxin ( heart med)
Warfarin ( blood thinner)
Clyclosporone ( sp?) used for organ transplant patients
antibiotics
sedatives
cholesteral lowering drugs
anti-psychotics
Theophylline ( asthma)
Protease ( an AIDS drug)

I read someone above takes it, and im not saying it cant be taken and work, its just that it shouldn't be taken without absolute guidance of a Dr that knows all your meds....thus it shouldn't be available OTC in my opinion...

VALERIAN is .safe...and its been used for centuries..great sleep aid with no side effects...and the RX Valium IS derived from this root..For tea, just add one tsp. of dried root to a cup of boiled water and steep..or if you'd rather, take 475 milligram capsules UP TO 3 times a day.. ( read the label but thats what mine always says)

I think i am pretty up to date with supplements and how they work and why but to be honest...for biitchiness...nothing ever worked for me honey...you cant expect to just feel wonderful no matter what you take...i think you are already addressing the specific things that have been altered and may need help, but as far as crappy moods and biitchiness? Theres no quick pill for that..lol..sorry...ive never found one anyway...

well hang on...I THOUGHT i found a pill like that...called Dialudid...but it was all a lie..lol...it turned my world into hell and me a biitch straight out of it..lol

Im still on an antidepressant..and the one that i take to support that is 5HTP..which makes your brain make its own serotonin...so it doesnt hurt to take it with the wellbutrin, it actually helps me to start making it again on my own..

Make sure you bulk up on Vitamin C...(just think C for "CALM" ) any excess gets excreted so cant hut you and it helps your brain to make serotonin, as well as doing another gazillion other great things for your body..taking it each day ( long acting and slow dissolving is best ) CUTS ONES CHANCES OF STROKES BY 50%....Its the best most unreal Vit/supplement around..

other then that honey..get your sleep, take folic acid/vitamin B if your really stressed out ( brain vitamins and unless your eating a lot of leafy greens, your probably not getting enough folic) and get some regular exercise..walking..anything rather then nothing will help your moods...oh...and Vitamin D...your skin sucks that up from the sun...so get out there in it...lol

Your doing so so great honey..

Big Hugs

Ali
