My Son is in treatment for the 4th time.
He is pondering the idea of trying Vivitrol. He says he heard it will stop the alcohol craving and maybe opiate craving. But he thinks it won't stop the psychological cravings. Any advice?
It's probably time your son quit "pondering" and started doing what the AA oldtimers did to get and stay sober.
His pondering is the crux of his disease.. not the way out of his disease.
It is well described in AA's HOW IT WORKS: ...

Rehabs don't get you sober, they aren't "the answer" .. the "cure"
When I got sober rehabs were necessary only for the hardest cases.
Most folks came to AA and committed to it like the oldtimers did.
The answer is not in a drug - not in an expensive short term program.
The answer is in the daily commitment to a proven program of recovery.
The 12 Steps were the LAST thing that I wanted ... but the very thing I NEED(ED)
If your son is serious about recovery have HIM post here - not you.
All the best.

I also heard about Vivitrol and would appreciate if anyone has experience.
I took naltrexone (the generic name for Vivitrol) for about a year. It helped dull the psychological urge, but didn't kill it completely. It made it a whole lot easier to stay sober. I ended up having to go off it because I had to have back surgery and needed to be able to have meds be effective after. It can be a huge help in the process. I hope this helps.
No, I didn't but hear that Vivitrol is not good enough for stop smoking. The signs of alcoholism is not properly stopped by taking Vivitrol.
