Help A Loved On Off Pain Meds

My husband has cronic back pain. He has had 3 epadurals. He has been on Vicadin, Precacet and then the doc put him on Fentanyal patch. His last epadural was last Friday. He did not take any more pain meds or use the patches the rest of Friday and Saturday. On Saturday he statred get the hebies and felt like he was coming out of his skin. His body was hurting and he could not sleep. Does this sound like withdrawl.? I called the doc and he said it waqs possible. I say it was because he has been on pain meds. for about 4 months everyday. Please help me on how to ween him off. I say the doc did not give me enough help. Thanks
How is your husband's mood? I'm sure he's on edge because of the pain and the w/d but is he craving the pain med? I ask because he could be physically dependent on the meds but not mentally dependent. I'm no doctor but I would encourage him to try and stay off the pain meds. Since he's only been on them 4 months it will much easier to get off them now rather then 4 years! Good luck. Somebody else will probably have some advice for you.

It sounds like withdrawal to me. Did the doctor say anything more than "it's possible"? Did he have any suggestions about what your husband should do? I assume the epidural has helped the back pain and that the Fentanyl patches aren't necessary at the moment.

Assuming that it is withdrawal, I would treat it as I would the flu. Drink lots of water -- that will help flush the toxins. Have your husband take lots of hot baths in epsom salts. It will also help draw out toxins as well as calm the skin crawling sensations. I'm afraid there's not much that can be done about the sleeplessness. Melatonin works for some people. He should be over the worst of it in a week to ten days.

Good luck. And welcome to the board.

Cheers,
