Help With Portraying Addiction

Hello,

I am a university student, and I am directing a 10 minute extract from a play which deals with drug addiction.

I really want to stress the seriousness of this issue through the character who is coming off the drug, but I don't want to automatically stereotype, or use misconceptions.

Does anyway have any advice how I can successfully portray the withdrawal process through this character?
