Here Is Attempt #3 Off Oxycontin.

Well... This is so damn frusterating..

After stoppping cold turkey for about 14 days, I relapsed again for the past 6 days.

Im gonna try again to stop cold turkey and stay off this time for good. I hope the wd's aren't too bad.

This time around I have clonodine, ativan and Naltexone. I'm hoping between the 3 my wd's are minimized and that the cravings stay away.

Please pray for me. I want this yo-yo lifestyle to end now.

Thanks

Dear Just 20,

I know, from my own experience, that you are going through an extremely difficult time. It sounds like you really want to get back in control of your life, especially since you are in college. However, although your mother is helping you with medications, I would make sure that, if possible, you consult a physician. If that's not possible, please make sure that you take these other medications carefully.

As a chronic pain patient with irreparable nerve damage, I have been prescribed opioids for five years. Two of those years, I abused them. In year two, my physician decided that I needed to withdraw from the opioids (at that time, we didn't know that I had irreparable nerve damage), and she prescribed clonidine, promethazine (related to Compazine), Donnatol, and diazepam (Valium) and I successfully withdrew from the opioids. Although I still had some withdrawal symptoms, they were markedly less than what my physician said could happen if I withdrew 'cold turkey.' Unfortunately, my chronic pain continued and, after trying various treatments from acupuncture to cortisone injections to visualization, I was started on opioids. I have been able to use my pain medication correctly and, subsequently, return to a more 'normal life.' Rather than concentrating on me, I want to give you some encouraging thoughts.

You wrote that "'...I have ruined my life at 20 years old.'" I was in college, too, when I had my first of 18 operations. With the continued use of opioids, I thought that my college days were numbered. Although your circumstances may differ, your life is not ruined. You CAN withdraw from opioids, and you CAN graduate from college. Once I was able to gain contol over my life and not let the pain medication control it, I was able to finish college. Currently, I'm in law school and, one day, I hope to be appointed to the bench.

It takes a huge amount of courage to continue your undergraduate education while withdrawing from opioids. I have no doubt that you'll succeed. There are so many people here to help you get through this. Stick with the detoxification schedule and, if you relapse, don't feel like you've failed. Many of us have relapsed - this is part of the process of recovery. You had to make a decision either to continue to use or continue with your education. This decision was not only difficult, but took a huge amount of bravery on your part. Life threw you a curvevball, but in no way have you 'struck out.'

My thoughts are with you!

Ben
