I was taking anywhere from 12-20 Hydro 10's per day and 2 otc sleeping pills at night to fall asleep. EVERYDAY---I did that for about 3 years straight...The first 2 years i was drinking 6-8 beers when i came home from work too and still following up with the sleeping pills to fall asleep. I wonfder what kind of damage i have done to my body ? I know that heart disease is in my family, as my father died at age 41 from a heart attack--His was from drinking and smoking as well as a stressful sales job---
I am in the same line of work--i just dont drink anymore--I smoke about a pack of cigs a day and now am on Suboxen...
Do you think the damage is already done or will i be ok ? Any suggestions ? I have always heard that the liver takes the brunt of the storm and was told to have a liver functions test done...Is there any signs or symptoms of liver damage ?
Any help is appreciated---This health thing is the only thing that scares me these days...
Dear Dad,
Worrying is by itself, stressful and not good for your body..
Try to concentrate on all the good things yur doing right now,and not on what you may have done in the past...
If your eyes were all yellow, and you had some symptoms, you would have more reason to think you have damaged your liver....and yes there are tests to do to check that out..
talk to your Dr...hes the one that would know best...its the aspirin part(acetaminiphen sp? ) of the drugs that seem to do the most liver damage, like Tyenol # 3...dont know what your DOC is made of,. bu again your Dr will and will know what to check for..
Dont worry too much and congrts on changing your life for the better.
Hugs
Ali

What was your gig ?
Put it this way
Theres many that have done a WHOLE LOT worse then you
and many that have done no where near as many as you did....
Its dangerous to make comparisons, cus we all handle drugs differently and build tolerance differently, also taking into account height, weight, etc...
My "gig" lol was hydromorphine, and had a really really high tolerance to them...before i was able to quit, one Dr told me that my daily dose ws enough to take down a cow..
Mooo...
Thank God we are off of them, who knows how many more we would hae done years from now?

Hey Soberdaddy
You sound were like I was when I quit.
I did 20-25 norcos for 2-3 years and drank a lot of beer. I had the same concerns you do now.
When I decided to quit, I got checked out and checked out ok as far as the liver damage. I'm now 47.
I don't want to tell you to not worry, because everyone's different.
Get a checkup.
If you're still using, please get a checkup.
If you're still using you should stop drinking or stop drugging. Hey, I know, I couldn't stop either but did a lot of research and finally learned that it'd kill me if I didn't.
Norcos at that rate plus alcohol, will kill you.
If you need to talk, I'll be here.

Go to a doctor and have a standard physical. If you are not comfortable sharing your whole story, say you've taken a lot of tylenol over the years (TRUE) and you always drank (TRUE). The doc will order the normal cholesterol, blood sugar, blood count and all that stuff PLUS liver function tests. This may set your mind at ease.
For what it is worth, depending on your genetic make-up, it is possible you did not do any damage to your liver. It is very person-specific.
But for peace of mind, go have those tests. Many doctors now order the liver function tests (google "liver function blood tests" and you'll get a list of what the common ones are called).
Hope this helps and good luck!

I was taking 18 to 20 a day (hydro/norco) when I quit. I was also drinking 12 to 14 beers.
I weighed about 125 lbs....and I am 5'2".
My liver function tests were only "slightly elevated" and I was taking over the toxic dose of acetominiphen and drinking. I was surprised that I was okay...I felt like hell, and looked it too.
Welcome to the otherside. I have been on sub for 2 years now...how long to you plan on being on it? It is a GREAT tool, but it must be used with some sort of behavioral therapy or it is likely the needed permanent changes aren't going to happen.
Have you looked into AA/NA? Private therapy? These things are crucial because there is a behavioral change that must take place. AA worked for me...it showed me that there were people that could live w/o drinking and drugs and be happy. Today, I am one of those people.
Welcome to the board. Sub is a great tool, like I said, but you need to change the rest. It only gets better.

It never ceases to amaze me how much abuse our bodies(and livers) can take. Not to make anyone feel more comfortable about abusing themselves....what it does to our brain chemistry, our bank accounts(or lack thereof) and our relationships is astronomical. My liver enzymes were elevated on all the hydro/vikes during the 90's. Then idiot that I was....I discovered oxycodone w/o tylenol and thought"Hey...I can still do this and spare my liver"..talk about the sick addict mind! But it takes it's toll. For your peace of mind I would take the previous advice and get checked out...sure beats worrying.I commend all who have suffered before me and live clean and sober. You are my heroes....Love, Sharonn
I really appreciate all the support--I have been clean of any opiates aside from the Suboxen-Since 1/8---Im feeling great and very optimistic about the future-This is my 2nd go around with quitting. The first time was cold turkey and it was the worst hell i have ever experienced and i swore it would never happen again !! But low and behold i did it again..............
This time i wanted it to be the last so i was lucky enough to find a suboxen program and a great Dr.. I am now 9 days clean and feeling better than ever and i feel it definetly saved my life.
I am so thankful for my fiancee' staying by my side and I am thankful to have a beautiful 2 yr old daughter that will now have a Daddy around to guide her through this world.
She is my heart and soul !! I always thought that buying a new corvette would be the best feeling ever until i saw her eyes for the first time and realized that i was going to be wrapped around her little finger until the day i died... LOL
I am blessed !! Blessed to have by fiancee' still here and my daughter love is shining through, brighter than ever !
I am blessed to have all of you people-- whom i have never met,but are still here with me and helping me cope with and celebrate my life. I was an addict......
Thank You ALL !! Good Luck to each one of you ! I really appreciate the words of wisdom. Keep them coming

S.D-
My story is alot like many others here, I started out with vicoden using it very litle for just a pick me up I could go days without it, Of course then the use esaclated to one or two a day, and then before I knew it I was up to 25 or so a day and didnt even feel anything from it anymore. Just used it to stay out of withdrawals.
Soon after I was introduced to oxycodone, and that is when things got even more out of control. I was up to around 150-200 mg's per day when I stopped, Hard to be exactly sure on the amount, I was to out of it most of the time to even remember how much I had taken from day to day.
I really believe the amounts one is taking means very little as far as addiction goes, I have met many on this board that were addicted to as little as 5 or so pills per day, So much of addiction is mental, and withdrawal was still pure hell for them .
You are doing great, hang in there.
Hugs, and Keep Posting, It helps so much. So glad your here.

I would go get a physical if you sre worried and for piece of mind. I was takeing @ 8 80mg oxys in the end of a 3 year run and drinking @ a bottle of vodka a day with it. when my lab's came back ok I was sure there was some kind of mistake??? but they were correct, maybe it depends on alot of other things such as the way you eat, your weight, age , genes??? Just like some people can eat what ever and not gain weight...maybe it's similiar??? get a physical and put the worry to rest. Good luck with your sub program, i am on it also.
Wanted to add, S.D.
I had the same experience as Angela, I was SURE I had seriously damaged my liver, and spent every day worying about it, but still didnt stop me from taking the pills, sad but true.
Ended up, they did a whole run up of labs, and my enzymes were slightly elevated, but nothing to worry about they said. Thank god.
The liver is amazing, fasinates me on how it can actually heal itself.
