Hi All
Theres something thats really really been bothering me, and just now, i realized what should be extremely obvious, but is often overlooked..
Just how much does emotional trauma play in addictive behaviour?
If we are living at a time when addiction and the abuse of methamphetamines (sp?) are at an all time high, at a time when more stay at home mothers are addicted to Tylenol with Codeine* than ever before; is it at all possible that our exposure to world events and the bombardment of horrifying images playing a big part in our need to escape??
( this is hard to type, and may be hard for some to read so dont read any further if you don't want to read something really disturbing..)
Several days ago, I read the horrible news that several teens in Carolina, take a little puppy, tie its little snout up and BAKE it....i shake as i type this- so disturbing is this news item...they then bring young children over to see the little puppy and tell them that if they tell any adults, they will fall victim to the same fate....
How it is humanly possible to THINK this, let alone DO something this horrid?Its hard to comprehend...but its been on my mind and causing me such stress thinking of what that little dog must have gone through...anyone that knows animals..knows dogs in particular knows that they lick the hand that beats them..they are so vulnerable, so loyal..i just..cant get over the whole thing, and have to really work to put it SOMEWHERE in my brain to let it go...
This lead me to think of just how much we are exposed to, and once exposed, what to do with the information that forever after is in our recall...in our minds..
Do those in Amish communities- that have no communication to media events etc..live happier, live with less stress and thus less addiction???
I don't know the answers..just needed to vent and if anyone can share with me how they let go of horrifying images or thoughts..would you please share your technique with me? I dont want to sound mellow-dramatic but Im feeling so hopeless...
PetsMom? As an on line surrogate Mom...any advice or insight>?

It was stories such as these that the media get a hold of instead of serious world issuse that made me stop reading and watching. I found myself like a sponge, soaking up and spewing out all of the pain of the world.
There will always be wicked people, I just wish we would here more good news stories, but they don't sell papers.

OMG how nice to see you posting, and thankyou for that advise honey....its hard to do but i know your right..like you..i do feel like a sponge sometimes, and thats not a good thing.....i have to somehow undo my Google news thing that is on my laptop...thats where i read it, its running stock and world news that updates itsself every 2 mins. or something...

I actually have gone to that site..you had posted a thread where you shared the site to actually hear Mother Teresa, and you stated that what she said on one part makes you cry...every time you hear it or read it....so i did go to check it out...

i met Mother Teresa once...but as we didnt speak but a few words to one another.. ( i was in a meet and greet line) I didnt realize what a beautiful accent she had,...when i played back her tape that really surprised me....i could have sworn she spoke in Dutch to me....cus i met her in Holland with some relatives...
It was an awful long time ago Thumper, but i do remember feeling i was in the presence of greatness...
I wonder what she would do when horrible things went inside her head...or the Dahli Lamma....what would they do? How do they explain such people and how do they come to terms as to WHERE was God to protect that puppy...when his little snout was being tied up? When he was being made to suffer so? Where was God? He may be busy but surely an Angel should have intervened??
I wonder how they come to terms with it...they must find a way...maybe ill ask our Father at the Immaculata Catholic Church...I get along quite well with him...theres been times ive had to walk out of church because of the way they speak about women/unwanted pregnancies and sinners in the same sentence...but usually i just stay and try to understand the appeal the Catholic Church has to the Masses...just watch people very closely and try to figure out the family dimensions going on there...or watch my husband, and sometimes, just sometimes Ill follow along with the days sermon and actually come away understanding it..or at least the message he was trying to portray to his flock.,,lol.
I had a very varied upbringing with religion, my Mom was Wiccan but with Buddhist in her family..lol, my father.Presb. or something..lol..so we were taken to many places of worship and told to choose ourselves....to find one that made sense to and for us,..
Your lucky Thumper to have such a strong belief in God..it would be nice to be you sometimes...lol..good to be in your shoes for a month, just to feel what it feels like...lol

That is horrid. I don't know the answer to your question. However, I made a decision awhile back (1-2 years ago) to STOP watching the news regularly. I also cancelled the local newspaper, except for Sundays, and I rarely read the Sunday paper. If I do, I start with the arts section, then travel, then real estate, etc. and finish with international news, IF I get that far.
This might sound appalling to some, but I don't feel my mind needs to read about/watch all the horrible things happening in the world. The news has become so much more graphic and they do not bother warning you before showing mutilated bodies. My husband informs me of "important news," and then I read about it online. My home page is Comcast, which has all types of news, including "non-news" and "other" news. It has a lot of celebrity gossip and news of the weird, etc. I can choose my news.
I don't avoid news altogether, some days I will read/watch real news and current events. But, I no longer make it a part of my daily routine.
There are a few sites that only publish good news or happy news. Here are a couple:

Or, you can google "good news" or "happy news" and find more.

Ali I used to get upset ALLl the time. I am the type of person who would help a stranger. Today I keep to myself. Why? Cause there are so many scams. Example?

I think i am somewhat naive about people, and have a really hard time thinking people can be that bad...they have a MoM and a Dad..they are somebodies son or daughter...and they are human...how can they really be all bad? There has to be goodness in them somewhere..
But as you say, i am hearing about guys pushing down and robbing OLD PEOPLE...breaking into a seniors home and terrifying them then robbing them...and of course a gazillion other things that seem to be everyday occurrences...
I just cant get my brain around it...and i absorb way more then is healthy for me..which ive actually been treated for....told to imagine a protective bubble around me, and negative things bounce off....
I dont know, the older i get the more i want to run off and join a commune somewhere in the middle of nature....im not kidding..leave all the trappings behind and take my hubby and go...
Maybe i was meant to live in the late 50s...

Really guys, none of this stuff is really new. Well, Meth maybe but drugs and drug abuse has been around forever, as has murder, rape, robbery, killing animals, abuse, corruption or whatever. It's always been here.
The difference is the exposure to it and that exposure is technolgy driven. With the convergance of news and technological innovations suchs as YouTube and MySpace or what have you, it only seems that it is much worse now. A good example is the news story today (on CNN and Fox) of a bunch of 13 year old girls beating the bejeezus out of another. Kids are always smacking each other around and have done so for thousands of years. The difference is someone vidoetaped it, uploaded it to YouTube and now the authorities are going to prosecute and the fight was all over the news etc etc. However, the day that was filmed, the exact thing happened in 50 other places around the country. It just wasnt video taped and uploaded to a server. Or Amber alerts (which I think are fantastic) but you would think the world is full of new creeps. In reality, the creeps have always been here. It's just kids don't go missing now for 10 minutes before it's flashed across the bottom of the screen or a news item on Yahoo or whatever. People can't really get away with too much anymore. Rock Hudson was gay and kept is secret for 40 years. If Brad Pitt was gay, it wouldnt be a secret for 40 seconds. Politics and business has changed dramatically too. It used to require a huge PR campaign or or some kind of spin or whatever. Now, with blogs and 9,000,000 people writing about stuff and the news media picking up on it, it just gets much more exposure.
You can't "Un-Google" yourself, now can you...

I was reading this post, and I guess my thoughts or opinion which ever. Is that Bad things happen, some are worse than others and they have been happing all thru the years even before our grandparents were born and their grandparents were born.. I don't read the paper that much and I dont watch the news much either. But sometime something catches my eye or some one tells me about

When I grew up, not a lot of kids played on the street, but that was the environment. I now live in a place where kids play all the time. Another example, murder here is down almost 50% since the 70's. In the 70's. Really. It's still god awful violent as any big city in the US is but its actually down quite a bit. HOWEVER, on the news there are at least 2 murders every night that have happened within 20 miles or so of where I live.
The kids rampaging through a high school in Colorado is an anomoly, I think. I know others have happened but that is more of a copycat thing. But then again, that was fueld by video game addiction. Again technology. I am absolutely not anti-technology. I make my living with it.
If you were from out space and listened in on the news, you would think the entire moral fabric of our society is dictated by Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, that a boogey man IS under every bed and the two most dangerous creatures to our youth were female teachers and Catholic priest.
I mean, when you look at google news or Yahoo or whatever, every other story is Miss USA, Mel Gibson or some psycho who kept is grandmother locked up in his basement..the Miss USA's, Mels and psychos have also been here. It's just that the press didn't report it nearly as much as they do and are forced to because there are so many "alternate" news source's that threaten their revenue stream.
The kids rampaging through a high school in Colorado is an anomoly, I think. I know others have happened but that is more of a copycat thing. But then again, that was fueld by video game addiction. Again technology. I am absolutely not anti-technology. I make my living with it.

Wow. That was one of the worst things Ive ever read. Animal abuse will bother me for days on end. Two things came to my mind when I read it. 1. Is that my son and daughter love animals and Ive taught them to respect Nature, animals, and people. They are both very kind and one day my son saw a moth trapped in a light and he almost started crying. Another time we made the mistake of going into a pet shop. My son did start crying. I know with all my heart neither one of my kids would intentionally hurt another living creature. 2. Is when I was about 11 my girlfriend and I kind of tortured these frogs. Nothing real bad. She hated frogs and because I couldnt think for myself at the time, decided I hated them too. We were fishing them out of the pool with a net and chucking them over the fence but we bothered some too. It wasnt nice and till this day Im still upset for doing that. I still get bad thoughts and feel remorseful. Who knows how those teenagers will feel when they grow up, if they turn out well or not. Im sure at least one of them will be haunted by it for the rest of their life and maybe they will even decide to make a difference somehow in the world to help animals. I dont believe the Universe lets things like this just go.
