How Long To Detox?

Hi everyone,
I have been lurking and have posted once. I have a question as to how long does it take to detox? I am going in the hospital on the 9th of Jan for 4 days for surgery not due to drinking and am wondering if this is the perfect time to detox? I drink every night usually to the point of blackouts and am tired of not remembering what I talk to my husband about the night before. Every morning when I wake up I am so mad at myself and vow that I won't do it again...only to freak out about 5pm because I have no beer in the house. So here is to a new year and sobriety in 2007.
Well, it's kind of a "loaded" question, MKM. If you think you can do it by yourself be prepared for prickly skin, night sweats, etc. Much of what people go into rehab centers for is to get professional help in managing the first few weeks of sobriety and the physical effects--coupled with intensive introspection on why you've gotten to the point you have--and how to deal with it. It's important to make some lifestyle changes, regardless. ESPECIALLY if you're raising children.
Some of us developed an addiction to alcohol and are managing that addiction in various ways. The important thing is that you don't give up searching for a way to win. There's Cognitive Behavioral change, SOS, AA, 12 Steps, whatever it takes. Just do it.

Happy holidays--and good luck.
Hey Mykidzmum

If i went into hospital when i was drinking it meant that my drug of choice changed for how ever long i needed pain medication, so be aware of any drugs that you may have at hospital as they may just replace the alcohol, but also they may just be the guiet entrance into detoxing that your body needs if the medication isnt too strong.
Suss out the local AA meetings or as suggested above there are many approaches to staying sober, keep posting and if your stay in hospital is the start then give it a good go and they may even have an AA contact at the hospital.

Light and love Zac
It took me about 3 days to feel okay, but even though I didn't go into the hospital; I did go see an Addictionologist every morning for the first week of my sobriety who prescribed Librium starting with 6 pills for the first day and then she tapered me down to 0 pills within the week. It helped but once those were gone it actually took me four months to feel like I could get out there and do things, the fog started to lift at about 4 months for me; it mind still comes and goes for me and I have a little over three years of sobriety. I attended AA meetings on a daily basis too since I drank everyday, and I still try to get in a meeting daily if possible. Best of luck to you.
Thank you for your thoughts. I was praying that this would be just what I needed to get through the first few days. I have stopped before for a couple of weeks just a few months ago because of not enough money to buy alcohol with and I didn't go through any withdrawl symptoms and I sure did feel better. So I know that if I can just stay strong-I can do it. Thanks again!
