Dear Rachel:

What's her age age? I know when I was on drugs, we have all of the answers but when I was in early 30's before addiction, before the death of my son, I knew I had all of the answers. Then LIFE happened.
I know it's hard to get through to someone like that, in my case it is.
My best friend of 36 years has become an alcoholic in the last 5 yars - if I don't get her on the phone before noon, she's slurring her words and by the night-time, she's a crying drunk. I told her all about the time I was addicted in my 30's - and she tried to help so much. I did not even tell her this time in my 40's. She wouldn't have remembered or she would have told e'one - b/c when she's drunk, she calls e'one she knows and hardly knows. I have talked with her husband - e'time I talk with her, and I have tried many times, in peson and on thephone,
it's an arguement, she says that just b/c I had been a drug addict, doesn't mean she' s an alcoholiic. So, you see why I didn't tell her this time. She is a mean drunk, too. I , like an idiot called her at night the night we came home after Mother died.
She didn't show at the mortuary or the funeral. She doesn't get the newspaper and she called me a week later and cussed me out b/c I didn' tell her my Mother died. We talked for at least 20 minutes the night my Mother died and she doens't remember b/c she was drunk but she will never believe that. She answered the phone so I don't even have any back-up like if her huband had answered.

Anyway, I know you're fighting a losing battle but if she's at the know it all age,
it will be even worse.

I second Matt's motion. I think you're wonderful Rachel and you're part of a very select crowd that advises with no hidden agenda or a high and mightiness. Everything that you write, I read. Not once have I skimmed your posts. There is some pretty profound stuff in there and you're very impressive. It's crappy that there aren't enough of your kind. God bless you.

Yes, it is very hard not to get pissed at them when their excuses are ridiculous. I guess, in this case it's hard to tell if she really wants to be clean or if she's coming around because my friends and I are the only ones who will help her. Part of me thinks she is trying to run a hustle but I can't say for sure.
