I Am Grateful

I just got home from a meeting. After the meeting this guy came up to me to say hello. I grew up with him. I haven't seen him in 20 years. He was a star football player, all around athlete and very popular. He said he has four months clean. He spent a month in a mental hospital. He said he saw me through the window when he was walking up to the room. He also said he was very grateful to see me there. Someone he hasn't seen in 20 years. I could tell he wasn't that self assured jock I knew so long ago. This disease is serious and it can f*** up your life. I am grateful my friend has found Recovery.

I bet it was a comfort to him to see a familiar face. I'm guessing you made somebody feel welcome tonight.

Hi Rachel,
Nice to see ya'. It's nice, ( I think anyway ) when we run into people we know or knew at a meeting. That happened to me, it wasn't a friend or anything, but someone I did know from my childhood. We never hungout or anything, we didn't have anything in common! lol Who Knew! lol It's not so much we're happy they are addicts/alcoholics, but we know of a better way to live, a way that could be nice for everyone, and for me I'm happy when I run into someone cause I know they too will feel how I do, or already know and are glad I found it.
Anyway, nice to see ya'. I wish I could better explain my thoughts.

Take care.......Bob

Thanks you guys. We were good friends back then. He just had the world at his fingertips, or so I thought. Tonight, he was insecure and nervous. I asked him if he had hope. He said, "a little." I feel kind of melancholy after seeing him. I know he was hurting. He explained a little bit of the wreakage he has accumulated due to his disease. I'm glad I went tonight :-)

This disease is killing people. It's not funny.

He's lucky he found his way to AA. I'm so glad you were there Rach.
