Hi,
After a party Saturday night, I was confronted by my s.o. about my drinking. I have been getting progressively worse with my drinking, particularly since quitting smoking last year. It's like, since quitting smoking, I can't handle my liquor any more.
I have a problem and I need help. I don't like the idea of AA. Someone has given me the name of a counselor, and I'll be calling today.
Anyhow, I have been reading posts here and learning.
The hangover yesterday makes it easy to abstain tonight. I just hope I can control myself once the memory of that fades.
hi i was surfing the alcohol web sites in hopes of finding something to help keep me sober today. i just happend to see your message and thought i'd respond. i do know you can only commit to sobrity one day at a time. and sometimes a little help can get you through the day if you really ..... really want to quit. sometimes making a menal note of what a fool you made of your self last night helps write me back and tell me about you. Cherie
Indigoiis,
Glad you posted here. Do you know of anyone in AA in your area? AA meetings are like auto mechanics. There are good ones and there are lousy ones. Consider calling AA in your area and they will arrange for someone to take you to a meeting. What do you have to lose? There's nothing you have to do but listen and see if you relate. No demands will be made of you.
If you are seeing a therapist and they refer you to AA, it's a bad suggestion. That is irresponsible on the therapist's part. That's like sending you to the phone book to find a doctor. You don't know where you'll end up, you could end up in an unhealthy meeting. The responsible thing for a therapist to do is to refer you to an individual in AA who will take you to a quality AA meeting. This is based on personal experience.
When I first got sober, it was important for me to have an open mind and try something different than what my mind was telling me to do. If my ideas were working so well for me, I wouldn't need to consider outside suggestions. AA might not be for you, but you won't know until you go. Something to think about.
I would be more than willing to expand on what I mean by healthy versus unhealthy AA meetings. Some meetings are simply better than others.
Keep us posted on how it's going.
