Sorry, in my previous post I had a question, brought on by Raes list. are there any herbal OTC health food type pills or vitamins or supposed 'good' herbss that actually do anything or are PEOPLE SPENDING MONEY for nothing?????????????
Ah...here's your question. Personally? I don't believe in all that crap. I think supplements like vitamin C ect are good if you're not eating the right foods, but the rest of it? Waste of money. Course, I'm against taking pills anymore so I stay away from asprin if at all possible.
I have noticed a difference when taking flaxseed oil, vitamin e, and I cant remember if the B-complex did anything or not. 5-htp and sam-e both worked for me as well. I could open my own health food store with all the vitamins and supplements Ive bought but these are the only ones I continue to buy
It all depends on your body and needs. I personally need Oscal (HIGHLY RECCOMEND) due to my diseases.
I take a B-complex and a Multi and eat right.
Exercise common sense and your okay. Some people swear by OTC--Example
Not sure spelling but glucosamine? shark cartilage people swear it works?
I have been told by the best ortho doctors and many other docs all these vitamins are garbage and can be dangerous as the fillers ? there are no FDA standards.
So you will get a different opinion.
For me if i eat healthy exercise multi -b-complex and oscal that's my program.
IMO each person needs to figure there own protocol of vitamins.

iT JUST AMAZES me thatt all these helthfood stores, and even regular grocery stores, have tons & tons of stuff, and people buy things like
bee jelly, oil oofff oregan0 & even things like ginsing. But for the most parttt, my experience hhas been, nothing really does anything.
I have read how ginsing makes people extra awake & alert & other stuff makes u feel 'good'.
My experience has beenn tthat nothing iivee triied does anythinng. But if that is true, are all these things working as placebos?
Maybe I can open a store and sell magnets and rockss and ddirt & oil & have it do things like give people special secret subtle powers. I could even give them a credut fir siomething else in the storee if it doesnt work. JUST THINK, THEY
COULD BUY a magnet package & if not satisfied i could give them a coupon for dirt.

you old dog - what a delight to log on here and see a few messages from you! and you said:
"JUST THINK, THEY COULD BUY a magnet package & if not satisfied i could give them a coupon for dirt."
only you could think of this! man...you may be onto something there. let me know if this idea comes to fruition.
lisa - i'm curious and this totally off topic - you said: "Course, I'm against taking pills anymore so I stay away from asprin if at all possible."
man i must really be out of the loop where the medical arena is concerned. you do not require an aspirin or other anti-coagulant(s) after an MI? it's been a long time since i've practiced nursing and i know you had major surgery to correct the heart problem, but bring me up to date - is this no longer protocol to not give anticoagulant(s) long term after one has suffered a MI?
hugs all around ~

Browndog...Good Morning
I believe if you are eating whole foods........fruits,vegetables,lean chicken, fish, legumes, brown rice,nuts.....you will get most of the vitamins you need. The problem is that very few of us do it consistently.I don't.I try to but fall short at times.
I will take a multi-vitamin about twice a week.
I don't spend my money on all that other stuff.I try and spend my money on buying organic fruits and vegetables instead....which are expensive.
I think I'm pretty healthy since I haven't been sick in years. That's the only barometer I have to measure with.I certainly don't spend my money on doctors so who knows? I could be slowly dying from some malignant tumor I have growing inside of me.
Although I suspect it will be something like getting knocked on the head by my surfboard and drowning or a lethal bite from a box jellyfish or a tiger shark.
Whatever it is,I hope it's fast.
I've informed my friends to not spend any money on a funeral.Bury me in the back yard and make sure my dogs are taken care of.LOL
I understand what Lisa's talking about. When I got clean, not taking pills became a new phobia for me.I will take advil for muscle pains but I'm try to find non-chemical means for problems I have today.Sometimes it can mean just sitting still for awhile.
Thanks

Sitting still Tim? What a concept..lol Trying to do that today, just want to be still. xxxooo
Tim Woman as they get older are in danger of osteoporosis. Any good doctor will do a bone density test and depending on the results determine if a vitamin like oscal and a healthy diet will do or if the bone density test shows osteo then there are a bunch of drugs they will be put on.
You have to be crazy not to have yourself checked. Before hip replacements were perfected many woman broke there hips and slowly died. I watched my grandma who fell and never got out of bed.
Today its amazing what they can do.
Tim some people do not go to doctors phobia(MY EX) we fought for years over her health and to this day I worry about her.
Anyway JMO Tim But if you have a loved one of female persuasion they should be checked ASAP as the bones do load density and it seems like the HIP goes first.
But the pain is in your back or knees. So you may have bone on bone in hip yet nO PAIN IN HIP.
This was my case and they f-ed up and scoped my knee before finally figuring out I had bone on bone in hip.
Tim I read where certain multiVitamins are JUNK so you really need to become educated with OTC meds.

After my break, I will get a bone density test. I have had one a few years back and it was fine. I don't eat nearly enough of the right foods...this I know. I have a hard time taking vitamins too. Go figure....could eat handfuls of pills...now to take a multi vitamin is a chore. I do try though.
My husband has a cabinet full of vitamins and eats them religiously...he is very athletic and has bad knees from all those years of "dunking"! He still plays a few times a week for a mens league...so good for him.
I think calcium is in order....for prevention especially us women.

I sure understand where Tim is coming from- not getting check ups. Besides the fact that Drs seem to love squeezing our gonads and sticking their hands up our....Men just hate going to Drs....Period.
But my wife makes appointments and I actually usually go to them--though to date I never 'found the time' to get the bloodwork done that they ordered 2 years agoooo or 2 weeks ago.
But that is stupid, for me--I must admit- since I got C.
Tim, the really dangerous thing for old dopers not getting check ups is really real. I knew this guy in Buffalo. He was a born againer and a kinda health nut. All organics, mostly, no sugar, etc. He opened a vegetarian reastuarnt etc.
Well 30 years ago when I knew him he was not that way. He was a big time user. One time he was in the hospital, i think for hep, & he was actually dealing smack out of his room.
About 10 years ago he died. I think it was his liver or whatever it is that happens to you from untreated hep (which i guess does not give many symtoms)
I know he had a wife and at lleast 1 kid. So- there are things much worse then a shark attack. I would rank dying from being stupid or stubborn (like me) is one of them

Excuse me,Who are you calling an old doper?LOL
You're right.I do get a prostrate check every 2 years as every man should after 45.
I just wished that old knarly doctor would at least give me a compliment before he shoves his finger up my a**.Hell,I don't even get a dinner invitation afterwards.
