Paxil (paroxetine hydrochloride) also known as Aropax, Seroxat, Deoxat is an antidepressant in the category known as SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors).
Paxil is used to treat Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder/Social Phobia, Generalised Anxiety Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Paxil is generally considered to be as effective as standard anti-depresants in the treatment of depression, there is also some evidence that Paxil may be of value in people who have not responded to standard therapy.
In general, improvement in patients starts after one week but does not become properly effective until the second week of therapy. Aropax is effective in improving depression and suicidal ideation (thoughts) during the first few weeks of therapy.
Consumer information can be found here, this include the most common side effects:

Paxil is NOT recommended in patients under the age of 18. If you are younger than 18 I would strongly urge you to get a second opinion before taking this medication. The FDA has recently issued a warning for Paxil, stating that the drug can cause suicide, suicidal ideation and violence in children and teenagers.

hey, i've been on paxil. i stayed on it for 6 months. i quit it though because all i wanted to do was sleep. which in my opinion was not a solution to my problems. because no one can just sleep through life. other then that it wasn't to bad. give it a shot, and if it doesn't work for you or you don't feel confortable stop taking it. i don't really know what else to tell you. all the best in finding a new doctor, and i hope you find something that works for you.

Let me first say that if the only symptom you are having is images of suicide then you definately need a second opinion. I was prescribed Paxil after my son was born -- 6 years ago. The physician who diagnosed "post-pardom depression" was a regular family doctor. I was not referred to a psychologist which is suppose to go hand in hand with an antidepression prescription. Doctors are continuing to prescribe these meds along with sedatives to people who they think may be suffering from depression. Please do yourself a favor and see a counselor who is qualified to diagnose these illnesses. Your family doctor can only touch on the subject, they are not suppose to deem you depressed. A psychiatrist is a specialist with these types of meds and illnesses. I have had quite the journey getting off of these medications (Paxil & Temazepam) and the withdrawl mirrors the same symptoms as if you were getting off of heroine. These medications can interfere with your memory and also cause you to think suicidal thoughts. If you already have these suicidal thoughts in your brain, you may need a different line of treatment.Good luck.
Paxil may make you have sexual side effects and mild weight gain. If your doctor knows about your history you should try it. You could feel much better. If not change it. Anti depressants can help. You used drugs and your brain chemisty is off. Let them fix it.
FYI - get your evaluation not from a family practicioner but from a phsicatrist who specializes at least in part with drug addiction. Dont call your doctor a dumb a** because he or she has studied this and regardless of what you think knows more than you! It is usual for addicts to think they know better than doctors. DOnt fall into that just find someone you trust and dont leave any stone unturned.
