I Have Been On Methadone Almost 2 Years!

I have been on methadone for almost 2 years. From a back surgery where i have 6 steel rods in my lower back.
Also on loritab, oxicodone, soma for the unbearable pain.
a pain management Dr put me on 40 mg while I was in the hospital 21 days.
I went home and she keep me on it until I made up my mind I was tired of it.
I cut my dose in half for months and then another half months later, and then another and another until 4 weeks ago and I was taking 1 !/4 mg and I went to the hospital Sat. with fever and all and they did find out I had bladder infection.
But since then I have not taking the methadone!
I have cut back my codone and all.
I heard that it was good to take the pain meds coming off of the methadone.
It would help? Tell me?
To hear some of the stories on here has broke my heart and I know compared to
most mine isn't nothing. But, I did take 7.5 codone today and it helped.
I hope I am over most of the withdraws. I just don't know how some can do it as much as they take. I do feel for them.
What can I do to help to ease the withdraws. I have did alot of praying and thats the most important.
i just found this web site. i have been taking vicodin (about 5 a day ) and methadose< about 3 a day. am trying to quit but phycical withdrawal is to bad. does anyone know how long withdrawal will take?
Both methadone and vicoden are opiates but methadone stays in your system alot longer. It is stored in the fatty tissue. I suggest you talk to the MD who is precribing these meds to you about your desire to taper off of them. It is not a good ideal to quit methadone cold turkey, you need help from a qualified doctor.

I am amazed you have been able to detox from 40 down to 1.5 by halving your dose each time. Most people have to reduce much more slowly. Hot baths and exercise can help and anything to keep you busy. Sounds like your on the right track, good luck.
I'm sorry I didn't see the replies. Thanks so much!
It helps to hear from others.
Is headaches normal?
I am having major ones.
It has been 5 days now!
Broadway,
I went from 40mg of methadone to 20mg to 10mg then 5mg in a time of 20 months and
then down to 1/2 of a 5 and then 1/2 of the 1/2 which was 1 1/4mg and then
did the last one for about 2 weeks and then stopped.
I have been taking some oxicodone to help me thru but I have major headaches!
Is this normal?
yes
I also had been on methadone for 2 yrs (20mg). I tried to ween myself off but my family confronted me 9 days ago and I decided to go cold turkey. I was so scared and had heard a lot of horrer stories but I am keeping strong in my mind. I went to the doctor and he gave a hole aray of pills but I have found Codine 60mg, Valium 5mg, and Zotabs-Imovane (sleeping pills) best for the first week. I have cut down to half the valium this week and so on. You DON"T have to suffer (too much)! I will be off all pills as I am going to a rehab for two months and this is the best thing that has happened! Get some good people around you! LOVE KEEPS YOU STRONG! Go for lots of walks! Look after yourself! Think of all the GOOD that is going to come for YOU when your off it for good. I think methadone stops you from growing, (mind, body + soul)! I feel a HUGE difference in myself just after 9 days, and everyone else sees it too. Don't be ashamed to tell your family and friends you need their help (cause you do)! If they love you they will be there for you! ASK FOR HELP & KEEP STRONG!
What is the worst thing is I have to work 6 1/2 hours a day. My husband is disabled froma heart attack and Emphzema and I work at a call center and take calls for the 6 1/2 hours and it has been tormenting.
Please pray for me.
well I am in the 6th day without Methadone.
Today I think was the worst.
I called my Dr. she told me to go back on 1 1/2mg every other day.
BUT! I have came this far what sould I do?
It seems I am a litttle better since I got home from work today.
Should I or tough it out?
Please answer!
I'm just wondering why you question your Dr's advice. Do you not trust him or what is the problem? His advice should count more than anyone's advice on here, we are drug addicts, some of the sickest people in the world.
BTW,

I wasn't trying to be mean in the above post. I just think that you should trust your DR's opinion over anyone's opinion on a message board. He knows you better than we ever will.
I don't trust any doctor! I'm from New Zealand and it seems like every doctor here wants to put you on methadone. I have been off it for 12 days now (with help from valium, codine, + sleepers which I am weaning myself off with help from my Dad who is 68yrs (I'm 33yrs, with three kids). You know your body and what you can handle better than the Doc's. Don't go back on Methadone it is the hardest drug in the world to wean off. I had to quit my job for three months (got good boss) Do you have anything like a sickness benefit where ur from or insurance that can help u with money. And ASK family + friends to give u a hand with hubby for awhile, say ur having a brakedown if u have to! Life can only get better once ur off that s***!!! Some days are still hard, but u got to be positive , drugs only drag u down, even thinking about them (which is every second sometimes) drags u down! You can do it! You've come this far!!!
