Liver Damage - Symptoms

Hi
as some of you know my H is also an alkie, he's just been told he has some liver damage. He also gets these bad pains on his left side kind of above the hip and a little towards the back.

they flare up most when he drinks alcohol. Does anyone know if that is a symptom? I always thought you didn't get pain from liver damage and that's why it was so dangerous cause there was no obvious symptoms. But I admit to being pretty ignorant about it.

can anyone who's had this help out please.

BTW my H has been making a big effort to cut back his drinking. He's not gone on a bad binge since before Christmas and hasn't been drunk in 2 weeks. He's also had about 9 sober days out of the last 12.

He just got the news about the liver damage yesterday and I think its rocked him a bit.
cheers
Idgie
Hi Idgie,
I had a crook liver to, going to get a blood teat done this week, I havent had one since june,
My liver never hurt, and if it did I didnt feel it, maybe to drunk to feel pain!

Symptons for me were eye sight failing, I found it hard to read things, and I have excellent eyesight now, never worn glasses, but as I was saying eyesight , Gout was another thing for me, also Feeling burnt out all the time,
I kept all my blood test paper work checking one againest the other just in case my doc was having me on, to stop drinking, I was amazed how quickly it started to heal (The first time)
My liver was back to nearly normal in 6 mths the first time I stopped, but I started drinking again and this time things were way worse in the liver dept, not to mention the amount of alcohol I was drinking,
I had to get blood taken every 4 weeks for a start then 6 weeks, then 8 weeks, now Im supposed to have it done every 6 mths, but I just can not handle getting it done, it takes me weeks to talk myself into it, I have a bad phobia of getting blood taken.
My liver was looking good at my last test, not 100% but good, Im hoping next one should be back to normal, I hope any way.
Dunno if this is any help or not,
Take care or if you want to know any more in detail email me,
Cheers Ginge
hi, dont know whether this will help u, my mum went to hospital this afternoon as she had a nasty burn on her arm, which she did on friday, i made my dad take her to the doctors earlier today, well she went came back not looking her normal self, the doctor at hospital looked into my mums eyes and said looks like u need to give up the drink, well my mum was shocked as shes never been a drinker on the odd occasion christmas she may have a glass but nomore than a glass, he asked my mum do u have a pain in ur left under ur rib and round the back, also asked her if she itched, her eyes are yellow which i have always noticed that going back as kids,he also asked about shortness of breathe or fever, well she has no symptoms, but she asked why and he said sounds like she has liver damage, shes 50yrs old no alchol abuse, doesnt take medication, and very rarely take paracetamols so its worried her.
hope this kinda helps i know its totally different circumstances.
thanks Ginge and Shell

BTW Shell - it is possible to have liver damage from other things than alcohol. Most people just assume its always alcohol abuse.
