Methadone Weening And Withdrawl

Hi there, I am hoping someone could help me out. I am currently starting the weening process of coming off methadone which the recommended dose is coming down 5mg every two weeks. I started at 60mg and have been on it for over a year, but made it my goal to go no higher than that and to start coming off after one year. Do that being said does anyone have any advice of the speed I should try to come down at and what I should maybe be expecting when talking about the withdrawls. Any words of advice or encourage would be appreciated. Thank in advance
Hi Cynthia,
I am happy to hear that you are determined to do what I,myself, could not do...Your attitude is in the right place to start the tapering...I'm repeating self here, but I was on MMT at high doses for 30 years. Swore I'd clean up for 6 months and then wean off. Didn't work that way and I burned out my receptors in brain...Anyway, this is only a suggestion because I've been around clinics for a long time. The most successful people tapered 2mgs per week until hitting 40 a day,and then went to 1 mg weekly. You will know your body's reaction to it,not the counselor or doctor.
Everyone is different. Sometimes these docs forget that,as if they don't know, really know, methadone in the first place.
Hope this helps. QE1
