Methadone

i have a question my friend has been on methadone for 13 months he is absoulutly dedicated to it i believe it has saved his life but im wondeing is he getting high from it? he is on 155 mg. he was in jail and he would have to double dose on sundays 310mg. can that hurt him and does he get high from it after being on it that long please help me with some answers
Maybe, maybe not. Methadone does get people high, it is a very strong narcotic. However, some people just get to a point that they don't get high on a maintenance dose. It has to do with tolerance. But, my guess is a double dose would get him high as a kite. Why on earth are they doubling an already very high dose? Even his regular dose is high, but 300 milligrams is downright scary! I hope they are testing him to be sure his body can handle that much.

First of all do you know why he doubled his dose on Sundays? I've never heard of that. Everyone is different when it comes to methadone but I think 155mg is a pretty high dose. Not to scare you but if he is abusing it in any way, methadone (especially higher doses) can cause shallow breathing. It is a dangerous drug and anyone on it should know that and not mess around with ANYTHING else while on it. Yes, you can high off methadone. It's different from the euphoric rush you get when you take pain pills but you definitly feel the methadone in your system. Some of the pro-methadone websites say you don't get high off it but I know from first hand experience that you do. I was on 90mg at my highest. You say he's been on it 13 months. Is he wanting to start weaning off it. Because if he is it takes a while to do it safely. Most clinics suggest you go down 2 or 3mg a week. It took me about a year to wean from 90mg. IMO, methadone is horrible and it usually makes the person on it sorry they ever went on it. That is why I would suggest to your friend to maybe start thinking of a taper plan to get off it all together.
