My son is at the end of his detox stay. He had intentions of going back to work and doing a IOP program. The work thing we are not sure if they are ready to take him back, so now he has called and said the detox place recommended a place in AR or CA. We are in NJ! He is confused at what do to. They are telling him they are smaller places and can deal with his dual diagnosis. They will provide transport from this place to airport, and pick up in CA. He is not really sure what he wants to do. He said what if I get there and hate it then what? Does anybody know how that works? I cant afford to get him a last minute airline ticket if it is not what he anticipated. Is he stuck there until he finishes the program? and what happens when he is done? Deep in my heart i know getting away is probably the best thing for him, but to CA that is really far. Any suggestion or comments? Am i just being selfish? What will happen to his car and bike payments? I guess they get turned in and his credit is ruined. He just sprang this on me. Part of me wants him to go the other part wants him to stay and get a good dr to talk to. UGH it never really ends
Hi Jm, I would wonder why the rehab place is so far away also. Gosh from the east coast all the way across to CA is crazy! Maybe you could call the detox place and ask them to find somewhere closer to you on the east coast. Or look up above these posts where it says "programs and resources" maybe there is something in there that will help you. It really is ridiculous how help is so hard to come by. Good luck Jm I hope whatever you decide to do works out well for you. Mary
find out what is available in your area and go there to talk to people. Or find an area close by. If you son is able to work and keep making his payments, maybe he should.... giving up the car and bike and starting over is pretty hard..... if he already has a job he can keep, maybe he should..... idk ... hard to tell. my son has been across the country to work for a year, and did not like it and felt homesick.
and now is on the same coast as us for rehab and halfway house, and is working enough to pay his rent, but he still says he misses home and family. we are waiting to see if he can get back on his feet on his own. it is very slow going... without a car it is hard to get to better jobs, grocery store, etc.
Maybe it depends on how committed your son is to not doing drugs at all any more. My son did do a 7 day detox near home, but knew within days of getting out that he would not be able to stay off drugs, not have a job and not have a car, and not see friends...
So he went to another state.
Look for a place that your son can grow with - he needs a life style change.
