My Pet Peeve

I have posted about this before and am again because one of my biggest pet peeves is that where I reside alcohol is sold in grocery stores...In my opinion It is putting a person's recovery in jeopardy when getting groceries that one is being subjected to be faced with aisles and aisles of booze and standing in line at the check out counter with people who are purchasing booze have their bottles lined up waiting to get checked in...I have heard several people who are in recovery complain about this.. this can be and has been a trigger for some, myself included when in early recovery.and I still don't like to be subjected to it ..as was the case today..It doesn't bother me as it did in early recovery but it still brings back memories and i am grateful that today I am strong enough in my recovery to be able to handle it but that is not the case for some. In my opinion food should be sold in grocery stores and alcohol in liquor stores and to have the two combined is a potential trigger for the recovering alcoholics who are doing everything possible to stay sober and then to go grocery shopping and have to put up with bottles of booze in front of their faces and people conversing with each other about parties and about consuming the booze. It just irks me and I felt like venting so here I am........
This can be a problem for some. At least one of the members of the AA group I go to went to the store for eggs to use in a dish he was preparing and left the store with both alcohol AND cigarettes, both of which he had given up. For myself, it matters not. My husband drinks. The fridge always has beer in it. I'm subjected to it daily. As one put it, "A bend away from drunk." (a bend of the elbow, that is)

I had an aunt that used to say, "Accidents are simply planned carelessness." So in that context I suggest that anyone going to a store that sells alcohol, think about what you're doing. Don't be careless and "accidently" buy alcohol, or cigarettes if you've stopped smoking. Does the thought "One is not enough" ring a bell? It does for me. That thought always puts me back on track!!!

Thanks for the post Pirate. Very timely this holiday season.
