My Son, Iv Oxycontin Addict, Had Severe Grand Mal

My son had a grand mal seizure over the weekend. He was weaning down from his medications with my help & he really should have been in a medical detox. It appears that his dosage possibly could have been dropped too low too soon, (oxycontin, which is like synthetic heroin), & the shock to his body could have prompted the seizure. We were getting ready to go to my granddaughters 3rd BDay party & he was on my front porch talking to his sis on the phone & letting our pets out to go when he started having the 1st seizure. I happened to look outside & saw him in the icy driveway having the most severe seizure I have ever seen. We couldn't find the phone to call 911 as it was lost during his fall. His brother & girlfriend ran out to help him & yell for neighbors to call 911 while I was trying to find the other cordless in the house. By the time they got him in the house, which was a feat as he weighs 180 lbs & he was still seizing, he stopped seizing on the way up & started again as soon as they got him in the door. It was absolutely terrifying as I thought I was losing my son.
He is still in hosp & will be until he can walk as he fractured his pelvis bone, bruised his tailbone, pulled an adductor muscle from his groin to hip. They did find scar tissue in several places in his brain that was caused from the accident a few years ago that we didn't know about, (we knew about accident but not the scar tissue),, so they said that could have even caused the seizures. Although he has never had a seizure before even with the severe head trauma he suffered in the accident a few years ago. They said at that time his chances for seizures during the 1st year after the accident were very high but after that would go down drastically where he would probably be safe from them.I believe it's from the drastic drop in medication as was 1st mentioned when we arrived at the hosp.He had been taking 80-120 mg IV several x a day as far as I'm aware of. We had weaned him to 40 mg a few x a day in about a weeks time.
Please pray for him as they are having to give him pains at the hosp & I don't believe most docs know about addiction as that is how he got in this addiction, (partially), in the 1st place. He does need them now but I'm so afraid it may weaken his resolve to quit. He has already said he doesn't want to quit now, which seems unbelievable to me. I already know I have to tell him when its time to come home he cannot use any drugs in my home unless I give them to him as prescribed & I know he wants to live here. Also he is a 24 year old adult & we have almost lost him several times due to this disease.
I know I need to let go some as he is an adult & I cannot control his choices but it is so hard for me as I love him so dearly.
I have signed up for a message board for parents that have grown children that have serious addictions so that will probably help me learn to let go a bit. I pray to God for strength as I feel such a mess right now. I am so afraid I will lose my son from this disease.

I am so sorry. It's scary when it's your kid. Been there.

Does the drs at the hospital know that he's an addict and that he was weaning?

Take care
Yes, but the doctors in my town at especially, our only hosp here don't seem knowledgeable about the disease of addiction. One of the ones I talked to said you don't have seizures from opiate addiction!! He said it could have even been from the very small amount of pot he had in his system??
C.
I don't know for sure...if he was using IV and that much, it's possible. Some opiates can cause seizures, like tramadol.

Pot? Nah. Really? They thought that?

Again, I'm really sorry. I hope he's doing better tonight.

A very educated Radiologist told me that seizures can come from head trauma/bleeding even years later. He told me that even a concussion can be serious later on in terms of seizures.

It could have been from that.

I hope he gets better soon.
i am not positive on oxy withdrawals but i learned this in rehab, there was a man who is an alchoholic who was given valium as he detoxed to PREVENT seizures which can occur with alcohol detoxification, so in the future for your son be sure that he is in a medical facility for detoxification given his history of seizures so that he can be monitored correctly, dont do it on your own anymore and best of luck to you and your son, tell him he does need treatment, oxy;s are nasty and he cant contnue taking them, keep praying too, i just said a prayer for him and your family. jewels.

C, That is just so sad, and terrible. My heart goes out to all of you. Hope he survives this disease, and you get your son back. Does he attend meetings? He should.
Good luck, Mom. I will say a prayer for you all.
The worst damage that use of IV oxy causes is to the heart. If he continues to use it in this way, he will not live to see age 28. We had a 21 y/o in our vascular unit who had used oxy intravenously for 3 years and the damage it had done to his heart was unbelievable. He had to have open heart surgery to repair the damage.

I don't think the seizure was caused by the decrease in his dosage as the MD also told you.

To save your son you are really going to have to take a hard line with him. I understand that you can't right now until he recovers from his injuries. I feel so sorry for you and your son. I hope and pray that you can get him into rehab when he is physically able to attend.

You are in my prayers.
