Hello all
Does anyone know much about Narconon? I would love to start a meeting here. Does anyone know how to go about it? It is sooo needed.
Any info would be great.
Thanks
Heather
what are you looking for ?
Narconon is a residential drug rehab center and information/ education center. they provide information on a wide array of drugs. they have rehabs, and education centers all over the world. they have community activities that provide broad drug education and awareness, while also helping those who are addicted through drug rehabilitation. you can sign up for monthly newletters that they will email you.
i hope this helps. i don't really know what your looking for.

You're talking about Narcotics Anonymous, right?
Of course you can set up a meeting. You can do it in your house if you want to.
Try their website. Google Narcotics Anonymous.

what im looking into is a group like alanon...for families and friends of addicts to go to.
I would love that! I am looking for exactly that!
Then you want Naranon, which is entirely different from Narconon. Narconon is a branch of the Church of Scientology, though this is difficult to divine from any of their materials or websites they frequently cite L. Ron Hubbard. (My dad was a big gun in Scientology, so I know what I'm talking about.) They have addicts sit in saunas and take vitamins to get rid of the toxic substances. They do "assists" (these are very fuzzily described, you will never find out what they are from the website) and "drug free" rehab (meaning that you cannot possibly need a substance to come off of a substance, no ADs, no nada).
Anyhow, you can read their site, but you are NOT looking for Narconon, but Naranon. AlAnon is pretty much the same and served as the foundation for Naranon. But best of all I think is Families Anonymous...sadly, their meetings are hard to come by. Where we are there is often an AlAnon meeting in the same location as an AA or NA meeting, which is very convenient for families.

thanks mom...now maybe i'll find something about it online

Narconon, now we are dealing with a recovery program that is so phenominal that I simply can't believe people any longer are addicts. What can I compare it to,hmmm. Well think of any major problem that society can't get a handle on.
Lets take something that really seems unanswerable: Say a hypothetical situations were a bunch of young parents have 3 or 4 year old kids who do very strange things. Something bizzare happens to them and they become the little blims that weigh 50 or a hunbdred or more pounds then other kids. And there is all kinds of other strange behaviour that cant be explained. One or both of these poor parents of these poor afflicted kids must always be available to anticipate events. Like the kid might be stricken with uncontrollable yelling & throwing things and spitting at parents and peeing on the dog if the parents are waching a movie on their TV & he wants to watch barney.
Sure treatments are available. Some Drs have come up with the revolutionairy idea that these kids are fat pieces of $hit because their parents take them to McDs, etc 14 times a day.
And other profound cures have been discovered.
Well , lets compaire this to Narconon & other types of recovery treatment. Groups like NA, though not official have a lot of history, intelligene, studys, beliefs, sensible things & it is obvious most people benefit amazingly .
THeir areall kindsof other pretty much valid scientifid treatments around with various success rares.
BUT THOSE BRILLIANT SCIENTOLOGIST
I remember reading in one of their pamphlets that L Ron Hubbard, the great humanitarian (or it is possible that they said one of his key followers, but i think it was him) discovered a revolutionairy treatment for addiction.
Once i starting reading thru the complete nonsense of every aspect of the treatment, I guess it would be maybe comparible to a clinically insane person , created a treatment program to make these fat kids not fat & not brats. A big part of the treatment would involve combining flea eggs, with poppy seeds & dried up dead toads, Stirring it up, and having them snort it.
other forms of treatment might involve them sleeping in piled of cow $hit.
Seriously - narconon is a bad thing. I guess maybe if ur only choices for the rest of ur life were to sniff glue, swallow gasoline and spend all ur time with charles manson, maybe narconon would be a better choice,

I think perhaps you overste your case a bit, BD ;-)
It has helped some, but there are some aspects of their so-called treatment that are suspect and not necessarily on a sound scientific foundation. They are in it for the money to a large degree and do not readily disclose their methods. Think Tom Cruise saying that post-partum depression is all in a woman's head (though what he could possibly know about a woman's mind I cannot imagine) and that psychiatry is nonsense...that's what Scientologists believe and they are welcome to their beliefs, I just wish they'd be a little more forthcoming in sharing their beliefs without having to make financial investment. I know several Scientologists as a result of my dad's long association with them in a professional capacity and they are not bad people...I just don't dig their philosophy so much.
Sorry for the hijack...

Individuals who practice Scientology are not bad people as far as I know. Perhaps I do overstate my case, I'm not sure. I might even be understating it. I never took part in their rehab - but I do think some of their methods are deplorable & I looked into it mostly by mistake. It came about a couple years ago when I went to a legitimate recovery place for help or guidance. While waiting to speak with someone I grabbed some literatuure on recovery. Amoung other things, there were these typed booklets about some new or unique study on addiction & some highly succesful plan dealing with some kind of overlooked plan of recovery & addiction that was only practiced through this special program. It mentioned nothing about Scientology - but seemed very interesting and scientific sounding & interesting.
Like I said, it was not only interesting, but seemed like it was an objective view with a unique method that seemed to make sense. But in the midst of the pamphlet, somehing was said that set off little warning bells. It mentioned humanitarian "L. Ron Hubbard " as discovering this method. Something about the name Narconon or whatever seemed familiar. I became suspicoious.
When I actually saw the drug counselor I ASKED ABOUT THEIR PROGRAM - and if they were 'Narconan." She didn't know anything about it - it was some literature on recovry that someone dropped off. I told her she ought to check it out, for the papers sounded a little off.
That night I did a a search on Narconon, and found that it was Affiliated with Scientoloy & Arizona and other states had Narconon had some serious reservationss about it. Anyone can do a webserch narcon or narconon or whatever, and see some of the serious problemmmms that were occuring in these narconan treatment plans.
WHAT I FIND PERSONALLY OFFENSIVE WAS THE DECEIPT Used in describing the program. THERE WAS NOTHING IN THEIR description to let you know that this was a scientology program.

Yeah, I know...it's troublesome. I totally get that. My dad's side of the family has some looooong and very odd associations with that group and even withon the family some folks will neither admit nor deny their affiliation, except in a professional capacity...it's weird. The whole thing is very nebulous and hard to nail down.
Did anyone every see the South Park show where they say some crazy story about some outer space evil being who traps these souls in the mountains of hawaii........etc & they claim that this is what scientologists really believe.
Not the best source of course, but if what they say is true it is more looney than I thought.
