My daughter is in 10th grade. At her school all 11th graders have to take the PSAT. 10th graders can take it if they want. We had our daughter take it to prepare her for taking it next year. Well, she blew the test away. The scores from their test are put into a database for colleges to see. Now we have been bombared with letters from Yale, Boston Univ. Univ. of Richmond, Boston Univ. ITHACA, Temple Univ. Tulane Univ. Georgia State, Seton Hall just to name a few. Has anyone attended any of those and what was your experience? If not what college or Univ. did you attend. Shantel
I have no idea about any of those colleges, Shantell..I be a dummy, but I just wanted to say congrats! That is so awesome about your daughter! Gina would be a good one to ask about this. Lisa
LOL Lisa, I be a dummy to. I kinda wish she was not so smart cause now we gotta pay for her schooling. Thank god for scholarships. Maybe I should get her stuck on stupid. Shantel
LMAO..we got lucky with scholarships with my oldest son. Youngest, we are paying through the nose....Good luck with that.
Shantel,
My son, Aidan, took the PSATs for practice, too, in October and we've been getting an average of three brochures per week the last three months.
Those are all good schools, but ultimately your daughter will have to decide for herself where she would be happiest based on what she wants to study, where she wants to live (city, suburb, BFE), size of student body, diversity, teacher-student ratio, etc. She might take a look at this page:
http://www.studentsreview.com/
There are several online college review pages and most institutions have a web presence now. The only one of the schools you listed that I have personal experience with is Temple University. I worked there for two years after I graduated from college and to be honest, I wouldn't want any child of mine living in that dangerous an environment. They used to call it "Fortress Temple" (but that was a long time ago, and maybe things are better now).
Of course, the best way to decide is to visit the campuses while school is in session and possibly sit in on a couple of classes. If she knows people who already attend a school she's interested in, she can go stay in the dorm with them for a few days and get a feel for things.
Scholarships and financial aid are available if you look. I had a free ride at Swarthmore because I am a woman and Chinese and they were trying, at that time, to increase their ethnic diversity. Also, as these things go, it's a small college with a disproportionately large endowment.
LOL, I guess you can tell I've been thinking about this a lot. What I really want to do is bawl my eyes out because I'm not ready to let my baby go away yet.
Good luck with it all.
Love,
Gina

Gina, She wants to be an architect. She did get a letter form Swarthmore in Pa. and also from Seaton Hall and Univ. of Delaware. She doesn't want to go to far away from home but that will change I am sure in the next couple of years. My main focus is keeping the boys away. Thank god after her I just have to go through this one more time with my son who is 12. Then I am moving to Ft. Lauderdale and since hubby is on your s*** list again I am going alone. Shantel
I don't think Swarthmore has much to offer by way of architecture, though its Engineering department is considered to be quite good for its size. Didn't Maya Lin (architect of the Vietnam Memorial) go to Yale as an undergrad? New Haven's kind of an armpit though.
On some level, I want my boys to leave town for college. If they stay here and go to Duke or UNC, I know I'll be running a laundry service for them and that's not good for their future independence. Of course, I may be singing a different tune in three years, LOL. Aidan wants to go to Oxford. That's a hell of a long way away.
If your daughter has any questions about Swarthmore, please have her email me. If I don't have the answers I would be happy to forward her email to people I know there.

Gina, We live about an hour away from New Haven. Yale invited her to go stay there for a week this summer. I hate New Haven it is a dirty city but Yale is a good Univ. I live right next door to where they have the Yale-Harvard boat races each summer. My biggest worry is keeping her focused for the next two years. Shantel
I think it would be a great idea for your daughter to spend a week at Yale this summer. She would get a feel for the place, and it would look good on her application when that time rolls around, if she decides she might want to go there.
Dont forget Shantel, we all have intellegent children.
My daughter is 6 and in Kindergarten and reading at a 3rd grade level, I just dont like to post about this on here.
There are alot of wonderful children in this world. Whether they are book smart or whatever else they are gifted at.

Shantell,
Wow - very nice. Shows both your daughter and her Mom have been doing their job. All of those schools are good schools. You HAVE to visit to get the feel. Also, see which are willing to give the most money. The combo of scholarships and school size/location will limit it down a lot for you.

Thanks for the info Donna. My two older girls didn't go to college and the Navy paid for my husbands tuition so I am kinda going into this whole thing blind. In the long run it will be up to her to pick where she wants to go. I'm trying to figure out the whole scholarship thing and grants and student loans. I have been researching on the internet alot thank god I have two years till she graduates. Thanks again, Shantel
You have three daughters, Shantell? For some reason I thought you had boys too. I have a lousy memory.
My one daughter equals all three of my sons in the worry and maintainance department.
Congradulations, she sounds like a sharp kid, I know you must be proud.

Kat, I have 3 girls who are 23, 21 and 15. My son is 12. After having 3 girls I wasn't sure what to do with a boy but he is the love of my life. He was born on my birthday. Best b-day present I could every wish for. Shantel
Kat, I am proud of all of my children. Just like Jody stated they are all special. Shantel
My youngest two are fourteen and eleven, same age difference as yours.
Do yours fight terribly? When they were little they were just crazy about each other.
