Alas, Kerri, I suspect the owner of that shopping center is a non-native English speaker and missed the slang meaning altogether. I've done the same in other languages I don't know intimately. (And a couple of times in English, too.)
My sister's initials used to spell, "DYKE." When she was about 19, my father finally got a clue and whispered to me one day, "Do you think anyone noticed?" I didn't want to make the guy feel bad so I just said, "Oh no, daddy. I'm sure not." lmao. She now goes by her married name.
