Just wanted to relay........M&M, Bryn Athyn........suburb of Philly......they are Swedes.........and very well to do ones at that........they have private sectors of schools just for their own up there.......they have a magnificent Church which many use for wedding photographs...no college up there though.
Diff, I was going to name my daughter Bronwynn.........in Welsh is it like white breasted or something..........like Davey's Sian that was one of my top names picked as well........I forget if he said it's Gaelic or Welsh........thanks for the information though on the hills.......LOL.......all them Bryn's we got here are all what we call Main Line..........translated OLD MONEY.......the filthy rich financially..........unlike all of us.........rich in compassion, and empathy.
So, M&M........oh looking at NYU........that's great........and Villanova......very good school.........Saint Joe's is up that way too I think.........not sure of what her major will be, but Drexel is a good school too.......only in the city and it is close to University of Pennsylvania.........if ya got about $30,000 to shell out up front......you got the East Coast tour down, huh.........keep in mind Cynical One comes from Maryland.........crab land........LOL.........oh up here too we have Muhlenberg (sp).........a friend of mine graduated from there last year......she loved it...........it will be so hectic, but a fun hectic..........your daughter has to be a doll baby.........and must be excellent with her grades......all good schools you are looking at..........then again you are her mom so we knew she'd have to be great with academics.
Again, not a topic related specifically to recovery or addiction, BUT in a way it is all relavant...........you, and your family..........all been through it caring for a dear daughter who has battled these demons.........and a sister of hers who is now ready to go off to school next year.........and you the mom kept sane enough to be able to enjoy the process of looking for schools with your other daughter........and me the addict..........fighting hard to not pick up and use....and actually know a teeny bit about schools..........showing all aspects of life are effected by this thing and yet it can be conquered.
Faithfully Yours, Bryn Hilly
Yes, I am so enjoying time with my other child. Sometimes, caught up in the drama of older daughter we just let the other girl plug along doing the right thing, getting those 4.0s, working at her job, working out to stay fit for her sports, and hanging out with her great BF. It's time to focus on her, she's the nicest kid ever - everyone says so - and so different from most young ladies her age. This kid doesn't even need parents, she could raise herself better than I ever could. Isn't it funny how we shoulder the blame for all their trials and shotcomings, but accept none of the credit for their successes? That's how I've always been anyway. Her best friend is one of six children whose mom committed suicide a few years back and she asked if her friend could join us for our little road trip since her dad is unlikely to expend much effort on this wonderful girl. So I'll have these two girls, great kids both, on a road trip through the northeast.
Bryn, I know the fight is hard one right now, and I hope you get some peace from the internal turmoil. I wonder why some, like Tres, say they've never had the desire to pick up since kicking, and others have a constant struggle. I will say a little something to the universe that you might get some peace of mind and that only good things come your way.
~:~Peace from M&M to Bryn Hilly from Philly~:~

Dear MomNMore,
What state do you live in? Don't you have some good state colleges that are a little easier on the pocketbook but yet very good? My kids checked into Millersville, PennState, and Shippensburg. Most of my family have chosen Shippensburg and one PennState and been very happy with them. Believe me, with expenses like orthodontics, college, weddings, and early retirement to think about it's best to think along those lines. We've only got one married and one done with college so far. My other two have their associates but are planning to go back to go further. MONEY, MONEY, MONEY! And now my husband was made an offer for early retirement and is considering it. There will be some changes around there, that's for sure!!!
We're in southcentral PA near Harrisburg.
Love,
Susan

I was up to Shippensburg a couple weeks ago. One of my little friends graduated high school this year and that is where she is going. Really awesome campus and a good journalism school. The only thing that would be hard for me is it isnt even a one horse town. There is nothing for kids to do there it seems. Boredom leads to trouble sometimes.
I was invited to attend Columbia, Ivy League, that would be cool, but for domestic reasons, I had to turn them down. I couldnt leave my husband to eat Vienna sausages out of a can for 2 years while Im playing in NY. So, I will probably end up at The University of Maryland. But, I'm also considering Mt. Saint Marys, the campus is beautiful, the school is great, but Im not sure if I want to take all those theology classes. Plus, the $$$ factor plays in.

Susan -
I live in MA, halfway between Boston and the Cape in a small seaside community. There are plenty of excellent schools here - she's also looking at Tufts, Boston College, and Northeastern, but she'll go to the best school she can get into and it'll all work out somehow. The big ivies generally set parental contribution to tuition based on household income, then the student takes an on-campus job and pays a small portion (about $4500), then they grant the rest. Their endowments run into the billions of dollars so if you can get in, you are basically attending school on the nickel of the alumni. Yale ends up being as inexpensive as some state schools, or close anyway. Many of her choices are "need blind" - in other words, they'll make it work if they want you, and the vast majority of students come out without debt.
She has worked so hard academically, is a three season athlete (division 2 or 3 material, division 1 benchwarmer), and has an incredible record of community service and service to her school. She has not ruled out state schools and we also have a second home in VT so she could attend there as a resident after her freshman year. Many, many options for this one. She may or may not get some money from merit-based scholarship programs, but we want her to have whatever she wants in terms of education and we'll make it work. I've turned the whole thing over to my HP and am confident that the right thing will happen for my sweetheart.
We are really looking forward to our trip next week - Monday through Thursday - and I'll let you know what happens.
Wherever she goes she will shine like a little star.

Guess what? I have a friend graduated from Shippensburg. I won't say on here exactly when but it was not long ago at all.
This person was an addict. Nobody even dared think he'd live to be 30. I wasn't on drugs when he was and vice versa. He got clean and I helped him do the prerequisites at well ya knowone of them community types.
I'm soooooooooo proud of this guy. He had the guts to get his eduacation even though he's up in age. He's got like 12 years in or more clean. I just adore him and the profession he has chosen well can't think of a better person to do that, except M&M.
Cool for all you guys and all these great schools. M&M the girls sound just so full of life and fun. The 4.0. Sports. Community Service.
Ahem, Susan I think we may live closer than we think. Dang, Nitany Lions. Ambler campus and all that.
I attended Yale and harvard, and Penn, and oh yeah Princeton. Haaaaaa, so beat that Cynical. Lady, I am so proud of ya.
May I say the place I went to was an annex and next to a deli. Nuff said. I must "Get Thee To A Nunnery". Yo, Nuns get good educations.
This thread made my night. I so wanted to share in the school thing. Thanks all.
M&M, I love your seashore avatar.

I, too, went back to school at the age of 36 and graduated at 40 to take on my second (or is it 10th?) career. I spent 20 years in sales and marketing, then got real sick in 1996 and spent some time in a hospital wondering why I hadn't pursued my dream of being a language teacher. Once I recovered I went for it and have never regretted it - best decision I ever made (besides my choice of husband). Good on your friend, Bryn. School is so stimulating and as an adult I think you have a finer appreciation for it and what you get out of it. CO, congrats on Columbia even if you don't go there - it is one of the most selective schools in the country so you must be a brain-trust. Any school can be good if you put yourself into it - just like anything else, you get what you give. (Except with kids, of course, refer to other thread =)

Bryn, Bronwyn is a lovely name, but we sure do have some shockers in Welsh. My boyfriend calls our little girl "Blods" as a nickname, short for Blodwyn. And one of the worst offenders has got to be Bleddyn, pronouced "Blethin". I know quite a few Bleddyns. Imagine them as babies. What's your little boy's name? "Bleddyn". "Right oh...." And there's Guto, pronounced "Gito". That's got to be the worst name in history. And Islwyn, pronouced "Isloin". We had a fish called Islwyn, coz we knew this really ugly bloke called Islwyn, and he looked like a dog, and so did the fish (it was a dog faced puffer fish). Man, I love those puffer fish, ours like to spit water at us. He was dead friendly, but we went away for 2 weeks, and my boyfriends mother fed the poor thing on magic mushrooms for a fortnight, coz they were in a fish food pot, next to the real fish food. He never quite recovered from the experience.
I'm in a real bad mood, coz the tax credits office are pissing me about. Saying they haven't received my forms. I'm entitled to over 2200 in tax credits, plus another 25 a month in fruit veg and milk vouchers, and they've been pissing me about for months. And the woman I spoke to today was so f***ing rude to me. Oh boy, she's lucky I ain't got time to be vindictive. What goes around comes around. Maybe she'll trip over her shoe lace and break her leg. I don't give a f***. I just want my b****** money!
love ya
