Ok...i just read that Beckham signed up with an LA soccer team for a contract worth $ 250,000,000,00 thats TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!!


This just infuriates me!!

How can a soccer player make that much??????????


No athlete should make that much ( IMHO)

Give it to a Dr that finds a cure for cancer, give it to the people that are putting their lives on the line for the sake of mankind...but to play soccer??

And wasnt he the poor sport that smacked another player in the head with his head 3 times? Head butting i think its called??

This really just gets my goat....

people are dying of starvation, people are working their asses off trying to keep their families fed, housed and can barely make ends meet, and this bloak gets 250 million to play soccer for another 5 years???

Am i alone on this or is something wrong with this

He is a product...its marketing 101...supply and demand! Society has created and now feeding the beast....he is being bought and sold just like a hunk of meat.

He is only getting paid what people will pay for him....do I agree...no..never...I have always thought that celebrities and athletes are way way way over paid.

What do you do though....he is a spoiled brat...he was in Barbados when I was there..and people were falling all over him.

I have never understood the worship of other people....shaking my head.

I played soccer most of my young life so I'm all for Beckham bringing some respect/marketing to U.S. soccer. I believe you're thinking of Zinedine Zidane of France that rammed his head into the chest of an Italian player in the World Cup final last year...unless there's been another incident I didn't see. I think you under-stated the contract also...I got this from cbs.sportsline.com...

"The Galaxy didn't say exactly what they'll pay him, but floated a figure of $250 million in salary and commercial endorsements over the five years of his contract. In other words, his move could be worth $1 million a week."

I totally agree with the point you're making though Ali, nobody should be paid that much for playing a sport. Alex Rodriguez of the Yankees has a contract of $250 million in salary alone and the Yankees haven't won a world series since he was traded there.
These salaries make me sick...yes the money SHOULD go to a more beneficial person/cause to society...

But I had to stick up for the sport...though I'll be the first one to switch the tv to football, baseball, basketball, boxing, etc before soccer...except for every 4 years when the World Cup is on...

Guess I should've practiced harder in the sports I played.. lol

oh and I see u put 250 million later in ur post...just under-stated it a "lil" in the beginning. :) Even 250 thousand is too much for any player to make...but Kee Kee had it right...people are willing to pay it.

What's so funny is that I saw this interview with him the other day on CNN.He says his only reason for doing this is for all the kids playing soccer in the US.
It wasn't the money....LOL


Then........they go to this little league soccer field and start talking to the kids.They talk to this bright little 9 year old and ask him what he thought of Beckham's induction to American soccer.
They tell him that Beckham said his only intention was to make soccer as loved in the US as the rest of the world.
The smart little kid replies"Please,the guy did it for the money"

I love kids.Can't beat that kind of honesty.

Look at Howard Stern who got a "bonus" of $82 million dollars! A bonus! Yes all this money is tied up with royalties and advertising etc etc. But when these same people pick up the papers and see all the poverty that is out there it makes you wonder how they justifiy it all. NOONE needs that kind of money. The advertisers and the rest should work it in that that obscene money is put into recovery efforts on behalf of the "millies". Imagine jut 10% of all the obscene money out there going to charities? Wont happen though cause we all accept "thats the way it is". New Orleans would be rebuilt if there was a "tithing" of these monies.

his spice girl wife Victoria certainly looks very happy...shes apparently excited about the new LA move so she can promote her new solo singing career...

Im not jealous in the least, and it probably sounds like i am...its the principle here that gets me...like i said thats a ridiculous amount of money and what kind of world do we live in that we place such a monetary value on a sport and yet under pay so many other more contributing to society type jobs right across the board....

Chris, yup thats what i read, it was WORTH that much for 5 years including endorsements....still...and imprety sure this was a more recnt head butting thing..he hit another player 3 times in the head with his...he was penalized in some manner, taken out of a game or 2...should have penalized him
