Hi All,
Ok I am just going to throw this out there, and if anyone has any opinions on this, please let me know.
My daughter, who is 50 days clean today, and living in a "sober house" is now being required to take naltrexone.(A new house rule) Naltrexone is an opiate blocker, from what I understand. Only the girls who have less than 90 days clean are requires to take this.
My question is, why now? She doesnt want to take, it she feels that she will deal with the occational cravings on a day by day basis.
I don't really know, but isn't she doing ok without it so far? I don't understand the reason for this, she already has 50 days clean time behind her.
What is with this 90 day clean rule? After 90 days you shouldn't need this drug? She's more than half way there.
I am asking because, we feel that she shouldn't have to take any medication she not comfortable with, and I can pass this information on to her.
I have never, myself, had a drug addiction and hope this facitily is doing the right thing.

The problem is heroin, taking something that blocks it sounds like a good idea to me. Especially if she is not long off, and believe me 50 days is nothing, I was clean for 3years and have started back on that slippery slope to addiction. I.E. I'm back to using once a week.
For me, I can be good, resolute and strong for 23 hours 59 minutes a day, and then for 1minute ,I lose it. Then, once that decision is made, I'm gonna go score some drugs.
It's a long road, and i'm not sure that it ever ends once an addiction has got hold of you. And minimising emotional turmoil is a primary concern when trying to stay clean. So if the rules of the house are take this stuff, If it aint herion, then why not.
I mean think about it, she's been taking street heroin for god know's how long, taking something that block's it for 90 days, that's clean and safe. Just accept it , and reduce the strife in her head.
Like I said it's a long road, and it aint heroin.
Good luck, and peace!!!!

Thank God your daughter is still alive. You need to read up on the 12 steps to recovery, the 90 days being clean and 90 meetings. You have to educate yourself. The more you know the better your daughters chance of survival.
Naltrexone blocks the effects of heroin. She can still overdose from heroin but the theory is if she is taking Naltrexone she will grow tired of heroin since it will prevent her from getting high on heroin. It is used to wean her off it. Heroin is the worst substance you can take. My son died from it at 21. My sons story is attached. A lot of good diaglogue and an excellent source to study up on drug addiction from a real life story.
Good Luck,
Phil

Yeah I was actually wondering, does that drug have side effects? I think it would be a good thing for sure, as long as it doesn't have all kinds of side effects.
It does have side effects. It can cause liver damage. That is why you need to get a liver panel blood count to check the liver every month at first, every week, then every month, then every 3 months. The test tests the count of some chemical in the liver. If it is too low then damage to the liver can occur.
