oh gosh - watch out brooke and gina(sm). i just heard where we are going to get bombarded with snow tonight in good old richmond, va. now don't all you "yanks" go laughing at me - on second thought, go ahead and you canucks too - the accumulation levels are predicted for one inch of snow covering the ground by early a.m. i don't do snow well.
i am sitting here biting my nails, as that's right - i suffer from PTSD - or sometimes known as POST TRAUMATIC SNOW DISORDER. this stems back to a noreaster that blanketed our city in 1996 and the day the snow started was the rehearsal - then party of my baby brother's marriage. we weren't paying much attention to what was going on outside but when it came time to leave (with my 2 small children in tow - cause they were to be in the wedding party) it was like a blizzard outside - "not a fit night out for man or beast", if you are a w.c. fields fan you will understand.
it took me 3 hours to drive from the location of the rehearsal party to my home...a drive that usually would take me about 15 mins. the freakin' winshield wipers would freeze up and i would have to stop the car on the I-64 several times to crack the freezing snow and whatever was falling from the sky from them. on one occasion a county cop came up behind me and said lady, what are you doing? i said trying to get the ice off of the wiper blades so i can see. he said, lady - you are in an exit lane remove this car immediately and he sped off. and who ever said the police are not around when you need 'em? ;)
we finally made it to the bridge that crosses over the mighty james river. i decided to put the car in "L" for leap and we spun and slid across that bridge like it was one of those water chutes at those theme parks. the kids got such a bang out of it that they said, mom - that was too cool - let's turn back and do it again! to which i replied - in your dreams! by the time we arrived to our home, it took me 15 minutes to peel my fingers from the steering wheel, as i sat there paralyzed in the driver's seat.
that particular snow storm locked our city down for 2 weeks. no schools, no way to get out unless you owned a pair of skis and as for my brother's wedding the next day - they were making announcements on the local television stations for anyone who had a 4 wheel drive vehicle to please help in picking up pertinent people to attend. when you spend 5 grand on a caterer with food that would not hold over for 2 weeks, well...you find yourself becoming very creative as to how you are going to handle things.
to my children's dismay - and mine - we did not attend the wedding, even with the offer of a 4 wheel drive escort. i tell ya - that spin across the mighty james did me in and in the not too distant future, i hope to be retiring to lauderdale by the sea. yeah, yeah, yeah, i know about the hurricanes and all that jazz, but until one experiences a blizzard while traveling over the mighty james, with 2 slightly hyper but loveable children, i don't think anything could bring an arguement to me retiring in a warmer climate.
anyhoot - don't know what is going on in nova or n.c. but just thought i would let you gals know the latest of what is going to fall from the sky.
love ya's ~

Hi Sammy

Sammy- I just got home. We have a lot of ice here on the streets..probably got 2-3 inches of snow this afternoon..it's really not hard to drive in it..it's just kind of slow..it's easy to steer out of a spin..you just need to spend more winters up here and then you will be a pro..
I do remember one year, something funny that happened to me in Atlanta. I was driving back on December 23rd from Tampa to Chicago. So it was night and we were driving up the expressway through the middle of Atlanta and it was dark..freezing rain..a little black ice..people were spinning out all over the place..it was nuts..people slamming on brakes (which you dont do)..they had all the overpasses closed..pretty funny..we finally stopped about 1/2 north of atlanta because people were too inexperienced and I got off the road not because of the ice but because of the crazy drivers..haha

Better to just take a snow day and stay home if you hate snow driving that much..
One inch however...shouldnt even stick to the road ways....
Take care of you.

Oh Sammy....you wouldn't be driving much where I live..LOL. My daughter, who now lives in Nashville, gets a kick out of the panic in people when they may get an inch of snow. She has learned to drive very defensively when it does snow down there.Hang in there...you'llget thru this..LOL

oh sammy
i can so relate to what you posted, i have severe panic anxiety disorder and i my first panic attack occured in a car so therefore i started to fear driving. PLEASE dont anyone laugh or take this disorder lightly because it has stolen 20 yrs of my life away.
i fear expressway driving so i stay off tollways, i am TERRIFIED to drive on ice and snow i can handle until the speed limit is over 30, then forget it i am a basket case, i so understand, sammy and i have had years of counseling for this disorder which is genetic on the maternal side of my family, but i am so consumed with fear that no matter how much i try to desensitize myself to the fear i cant do it. it is like a quick sand that just keeps dragging you under, first it was driving, now its flying, flown my whole life but now this disorder robbed me of that, terrified of bridges, driving thru mountains... forget it! i guess one would not feel comfortable looking out the window to see a drop off of the road on a mountain and to have my husband driving on this curve while he has one hand on the steering wheel and the other hand digging thru the cooler in the back seat trying to find a beer! this disorder got so bad that i couldnt leave my neighborhood, i almost became agoraphobic. but i did fight that part of the disorder by gently pushing out my safety circle that i had made and couldnt leave. now its the addiction too... so much to work on. jewels

LMAO, Sammy. You must have kept your cool since your children didn't panic.
I am no fan of winter but we own a 4 wheel drive vehicle and I've done my time in the Midwest. All the same, I go out as little as possible in inclement weather because I don't want to get nailed by one of these Southern drivers who lose their heads in a quarter-inch of snow. What Danny described is very familiar to me, and funny only in retrospect.
Hope you've stocked up on groceries and can stay inside like a sensible little soul, if the Big One takes Richmond.
And remember. Just breathe.
Warmest regards,
Gina
It's supposed to be 79 today, Sammy. Come on down! You haven't been here in what? 2 years?
