Oxycodone

Hello all,

I'm usually on the Families board as my daughter is the addict in the family but I have questions about oxycodone. Hope my questions will not trigger anyone.

Oxycodone is Vicodan right?

Ok so I have this lung problem where I am coughing all the time & my doc gave me a prescription for these (325mg) so I could sleep at night & not be coughing all night. I also used them after my surgery. I had several left & have gotten this cough again recently so I started using them the other night so I would not cough all night. They are great for that.

But I notice that the half life or whatever you call it is very short. I take it and fall deep asleep, then in like 2 hours, I'm wide awake or half awake & talking to myself out loud in the bed. Last night I took one & an hour and a half later was still not sleepy, so I took another one. It worked, but then I was afraid I overdosed & would stop breathing! Oh I just read the label & it says I can take "1 or 2" -- wish I had seen that last night...)

Anyway...

What is the difference between hydrocodone and oxycodone? These have both been prescribed to me at different times.

What is the difference between these medications and cough medicine with codeine?

Thanks for the help...

Forgot the most important question: ITCHING???? Caused by this medicine? I itch EVERYWHERE, even my scalp!!
Oxy is way stronger than hydro .... And if you get addicted to them ... The Wds are worse.
Oxycodone for a cough?

Yep, to control the urge to cough. And it does. Thanks for the info.

What about the itching??
Carol,
Its like Percocet vs Lortiab. You've got the Loritab. You've got the Percocet version. What miligram? Yes the itching is normal. And they are really addictive. How long have you been taking them? How long does your doctor expect to have you on them? I am not sure if you have had addiction problems before, I don't remember if you have. But I know how much you despise the disease. So be very careful messing with those little buggers. They getcha before you know it. Are you only taking them at night?
Take care of yourself wouldya.... Now you got me worried. Whats going on?
Love,
Jane
Hey Jane,

No worries, I am not prone to be addicted and I would not want these anyway! I don't get the appeal...

But anyway, 375 mg. When I was in the hospital for gallbladder removal they did a routine chest xray & told me I have emphysema. I've never smoked! Long story short, I have a dry cough that is horrible, keeps me up at night hacking away, so my doc gave me the oxycodone to help me sleep. Yes only at night. After I got better, I quit taking them & had some left so now I am sick again with this cough & have taken them the past few nights so I can sleep. Need to go back to the lung dr. asap and probably start on prednisone. He tried to get me to take it before but I hate prednisone -- but I might have to -- hopefully for short term & only when I get sick like this.

SUCKS!
Just remember Carol, none of us had addiction problems....until we did.

Take care of yourself that sounds awfully scary. How in the world did you get emphasima? Is it hereditary or is it contracted?
375mg? That's the amount of tylenol. Look at the number before that. Should say 5 or 10. Oxycodone is Percocet, hydrocodone is Vicodin. Both are addictive and were my DOC. If you're itching, it's an allergic reaction that's mild. Most people feel that.

My husband used to say he wasn't addictive prone either.

Oh yeah it says 5mg 325mg. Is that a lot?

I would not get addicted to these, I don't even like the way they make me feel. I can't stand the itching for one thing!! Felt like I had bugs crawling all over me & on my scalp. According to my doc, they supress the cough center of the brain which I what I need so I can sleep. Otherwise I cough my head off. I only have a few left anyway. Will not be getting more.

I would love some cough syrup with codeine though. Works great for what I have. Like Tussionex. I am too sick today to even sit in the doctors office. I guess I will wait till Thursday when I go back to the lung doctor.

All this is definitely allergy triggered. I already took a 24 hour claritan today & my throat is itching like crazy inside. Sign of an allergy (for me). I'm also sneezing some.

I did some stupid things lately like sprayed my face with insect repellent (breathed it of course) and scraped some stuff off windows & dusted without a mask. Dumb!!!!!

What do you guys think/know personally about Advair inhaler & prednisone??? I am reading HORROR stories on the internet about these drugs!!!
