Could someone PLEASE tell me why it is that no one here on meth board has said anything in posts about new treatment GVG that eliminates cravings???
I know that some people here are trying to quit meth. Doesn't this mean you want to find a way to quit? Or not? Or is it fear? Please let me know. Thank you.
The cocaine board people have shown interest in this new treatment and others as well.
Laurie,
Personally, I haven't heard of the new treatment that you are referring to, but I have a link that you can follow and post your questions over there is you would like ... there are a lot of people over there that probably can give you the answers that you are looking for ...
Just double click this link and post away

Thank you for the other meth board link, nytepassion. I have posted lots of messages on this meth board about a new treatment called GVG or Vigabatrin (it's listed on this board under treatment medications, and it's for all drugs of abuse), but no replies so maybe no interest. I also posted lots of messages on the cocaine board here about the GVG, where there is some interest. It seems to me that cocaine users are more interested in getting outside help than meth users, even those here. I wish I knew reasons why.
LAURIE,
GIVE IT UP. YOU ARE PRAYING ON PEOPLE WHO ARE AT THEIR WEEKEST POINT - YOU ARE MESSING WITH PEOPLES RECOVERY AND GIVING PEOPLE FALSE HOPES. THIS HAS GOT TO STOP. THERE ARE NO MIRACLE PILLS TO CURE ADDICTS AND THERE ARE NO EASY WAYS OUT. BLOCKING OUT THE CRAVINGS IS ONLY PART OF THE SOLUTION THE HARDEST PART COMES AFTER THAT DEALING WITH REALITY, THE NEW REALITY AN ADDICT HAS CREATED FOR HIS/HERSELF. IT IS COMPLETELY OUT OF LINE YOUR CRUISING THESE BOARDS OFFERING PEOPLE THE MIRACLE PILL. PLEASE STOP.

Dear Guest,
Are you 100% sure that I am giving people false hope? NO you are not, because if you had investigated this new treatment you would see the hope of recovery is now realized in this new treatment. Do you not trust our government or government scientists, is this why you are so against new treatments being developed for addiction? Science is hard at work in pharmaceutical treatment development, and they understand very much about the addicted brain now. This new treatment GVG works, plain and simple, I've studied addictions for years and it is my very life's work to help people with information about this treatment and any other future treatments that address the dopamine system. I have thousands of articles printed on addiction and many on this new treatment, and I've spoken to a scientist and doctor involved in it. This treatment works on the dopamine system to stop cravings, it stops addiction in five different ways including behavioral aspects (withdrawal symptoms), it stops sensitization, cue cravings and more. They said we'd never go to the moon but we did. You sound paranoid and where do you think that comes from....By slamming my sharing of this new treatment you are helping no one here, and I know you want to help them.

Laurie,
Thank you for telling everyone about this new drug. My sister is addicted to meth. and I am investigating every possible avenue to help her get her life back as she knew it. She will be extremely happy to know that people are working so hard to help her and others in her situation.
Thanks again. That in and of itself is support!

LAURIE,
I HAVE NO REASON TO BE AGAINST OR EVEN SKEPTICAL ABOUT GVG. YOU ARE RIGHT, I HAVE NOT RESEARCHED GVG....AS FOR TRUSTING THE GOVERMENT....IS THAT A TRICK QUESTION OR ARE YOU JUST NOT READING/WATCHING THE NEWS.....I REALIZE THAT IS BESIDE THE POINT BUT IT WAS AN EASY ONE.
MY POINT REALLY IS THAT WHILE ABSTINENCE IS A GREAT PLACE TO START....IT IS JUST THAT - A START. THE RECOVERY PROCESS IS FAR MORE COMPLICATED, INTRICATE AND FAR REACHING AND THAT IS WHAT TO SEEMS TO BE ABSENT FROM YOUR POSTS.
WHAT CONCERNS ME IS THAT WETHER YOU ARE AWARE OF IT OR NOT YOUR POSTS COME ACROSS AS SELLING GVG AS THE MOTHER OF ALL CURES AND THAT ALL AN ADDICT WOULD HAVE TO DO IS TAKE GVG FOR A FEW WEEKS AND ALL WILL BE MENDED. AND HAVING HAD ADDICTION IN YOUR LIFE YOU HAVE TO KNOW, THAT WHILE THAT IS A FUNDEMENTAL PART OF IT, IT IS ONLY A SCRATCH IN THE SURFACE.
IN ADDITION I WORRY THAT PEOPLE LESS FOCUSED READ THIS AND ADD ONE MORE EXCUSE TO THEIR ALREADY LENGTHY LIST OF EXCUSES TO CONTINUE USING...THAT WHEN I AM REALLY DONE WITH THIS ILL JUST GET ME SOME GVG AND BE BACK TO NORMAL.
I WAS RELIEVED TO SEE THAT YOU DO MAKE MENTION OF PEOPLE DROPPING OUT OF THIS PROGRAM BECAUSE IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO POINT OUT THAT NO AMOUNT OF GVG WILL STOP ANYONE WHO DOES NOT WHOLE HEARTEDLY FEEL AN OVERWHELMING DESIRE TO QUIT. THAT THE ONUS REMAINS ON THE USER.
I COULD CARRY ON FOR A WHILE STILL ABOUT WHAT BOTHERS ME REGARDING YOUR POSTS - BUT I HAVE TO EARN LIVING!
AND BTW - READ THIS NOT AS A DISSING, THAT IS NOT THE INTENTION BUT AS AN ADDITIONAL PAGE OF INFORMATION AND THOUGHTS TO PONDER.
MY BEST TO ALL WHO HAVE BEEN HERE.
PEACE

Guest,
Your post brings up relavant points. I've heard of the saying that if addiction is called a disease, people will think of that as an exuse to not get help. I'm not sure that actually is the case in addict's minds. The home page on this board calls addiction a disease, and alcoholism officially named a disease in the 60's by the AMA.
GVG is not being called a cure but an excellent addiction treatment, first to stop cravings from drugs of abuse. one of head doctors working on it said that it is "breaking the cycle of addiction so that people get their lives back." Yes, recovery is very complicated, but with GVG it is far easier. Yes, their should and will be recovery support to deal with any issues in past or present. The subjects that completed the clincial trials renewed family/ relationships, got jobs, or actively sought work. The doctor who ran clinical trials said GVG really is a miracle. Who can argue with that, and scientists said they are excited beyond their wildest dreams.
I've followed reports on this treatment and others for years, and never did I read any hopeful words, till GVG, where before human clincial trials "promising" and "potential" were words used. Scientists are very factual, not wishful thinking. Some people may not trust the goverment, but what I meant was government -'scientists'. I do trust them and they dedicate their lives to studying and researching addiction/treatments. The head scientist who discovered GVG has gone to many schools with graphics to give speeches against addiction.
I'm not relieved that anyone dropped out of clinical trial, it's sad. The ones who did drop out, did so before GVG had a chance to stop their cravings. It takes around 2 to 3 weeks to kick in I read. I imagine some here are not really ready to quit, and I'm on the wrong board with too many posts. Thank you for writing again, and best wishes to you. Laurie

Laurie, I have to go along with the guests opinions ....Maybe it is a great drug for helping with the cravings ....but cravings are just one part of the equation.
I am 7 almost 8 months clean ...yes cravings were a problem at several points , but a drug does not deal with lifestyle issues, it wont fix the patterns instilled in ones brain ....it at best will help with the fight but it is in NO way a fix-all which you continue to preach about it.
Especially with meth in this fast paced life with so much to do and not enough time ....A meth addict may get on top of his addiction and not have cravings .....physically....because that is the most a drug can accomplish , am I right?? Do you drink coffee?? or eat foods for a sugar rush to get a boost of energy??. Well I can tell you from my use of meth ....a lot of it was more than to just get high .....it was to get things done ....not enough hours in a day and too much to do ......
I appreciate your bringing this treatment to our attention but I am offended by your "pushing" of it ......I know meth well ......it has been my constant companion for many years ....THERE IS NO MAGIC PILL. .. only some meds that help more than others
I am going in for an assesment and treatment at the local substance abuse and mental health hospital ....I'll discuss this treatment with them
But for right now I really question your motives as many do ....you sound more like a sales person or someone pushing for the manufacturer than you do someone trying to help with meth addiction ...
This may just be my opinion but I think the desire to use meth is extremely different and more complex than many other drugs .....so stop promoting a product when it is you that doesnt understand the addiction

Hello Laurie,
I read your post and I wished there was a pill to erase the effects and cravings. I'm scared of what meth does to our mind and bodies. I've seen and been around different users and in the long run we are all sick. Trust me when I say this, only God can heal us and I'm waiting for my turn. Maybe this pill does work there's only hope right? Shoot sign me up if it does. Praiz'um for trying.
God Bless

Laurie.. I have read all your posts on this page and the replies.. While i agree with Both sides.. I am Understanding in the fact that you have Never denied there are Other issues to deal with ... And i don't think it's fair for Others to say you are pushing it .. You are not .. you are offering a suggestion although this drug is Not available yet Everywhere.. but.. Take a cigarrette for example.. the Only addiction i have known to this day .. Other than my partner's currant addiction to Meth and my inability anymore to deal with the insanity of the drug and abuse it brings to family members and spouses including crazy making through their mastered manipulation tactics.... I have smoked for 20 years.. and have Never truly wanted to quit Until now.. We have a baby and i am getting up there in age .. I worry for her without Me .. however, the Cravings & Withdrawals are so bad that i can't do it alone.. I see cigarrettes, i want them, i am with others who smoke etc.. i want to join in .. I drink my coffee, i want a cigarrette with it .. i'm angry i want one.. etc.. there are many drugs out there now to help .. there's the Patch, Nicatrol, dozens more to help stop the craving .. Why do i smoke? to relieve stress, food cravings, to socialise, to just relax, to take my mind off things etc.. the psych of the absense of my cigarrettes will be there for me long after i put down that last cigarrette but the drug will atleast help with the cravings.. I think this is what you're saying .. I do sense a little bit of thinking that this drug will create a miracle .. well if a Meth user on this drug could begin to be able to see meth hear of it or meet others who use it and no longer crave it .. Yes this would be a Miracle in itself.. My partner uses to escape his pain .. and Underneath the drug is his Real Genuine Inability to Deal with the Feeling of Pain .. He caNnot.. He literally dies from the pain and Has to Go .. He gets angry restless on the verge of exploding when things get so stressful for him .. like he won't make it without that binge to get him by to release whatever.. He will Always be looking for Something to get rid of that pain .. and i do think there are some who will look at it as oh well .. i can use Recreationally now because i have this drug.. Including possibly him .. but Until he goes through the long process of treatment and i mean for years.. he will not be able to just up and quit with or without this drug.. There will Always be a Need in him to escape so the Drug is Not the answer just Merely a very small help .. After all there are many steps in building a Sky Scraper so to speak .. or putting together a Model Airplane analytically speaking .. However, this is a Post.. and a Suggestion .. to those who do Not wish to Use your Suggestion or disagree with it they can simply go On to the Next post.. in All fairness to both .. It is disappointing however, because like i said in many states it is still for the moment .. Anyway .. a false hope.. i Know it is Not available as of yet in MN .... meth is an evil in itself .. and the Greatest Miracle of All is achieved First through Prayer.. and a Higher Power than Ourselves.. Only this mixed with The Freewill of Self to Want to quit and go through the steps and major therapy .. in my own personal opinion this is .. can make that change.. This is a pretty advanced world we live in and one that forgets God is the greatest miracle.. He is the Alpha and the Omega.. here wayyyy back when and still here Never changing wayyyyy into the future.. Good luck to those of you who do want this change.. it's Not impossible .. One more thing i will add that i was just filled in on by my partners wife who Also is married to my partners nephew who shares the same addiction but is now in treatment.. Just something that might be useful to some.. He was recently put on anti-depressants etc.. and the doc continues to increase and up his meds.. the reason for this ?? meth plays Havoc with the liver and the livers function was so fast from processing the meth etc.. and from years of use .. that it was processing the meds as quick as he was taking them .. so his body more or less was Not receiving the Full affects of the meds.. just interesting and thought i would share.. Peace all .. night ..
Hi Lynette and others,
Your message was so interesting as was Justonemore's/others. They showed me things, and believe I see reason why no interest in gvg and even dislike of it.
Of course it's a totally new concept to people at this point, not easy to grasp, and seems It's actions conflicts with people's reasons for using. A few showed interest in this treatment, but I'd rather have said nothing than to stress a single person out, I fear I did and I'm sorry. I think you're right for some not to read my message on this treatment, if not for them so be it. I should have posted science articles rather than bits and pieces.
I really feel for what you are going through with your husband, can relate as I have older children on meth, years of hell, and evil poison. I know that God can do anything and know that He has brought gvg to earth for addicts that need the help. I wonder if you have tried the patch, nicatrol or other to stop cravings?
I didn't know there was anything available for nicotine craving. If a product has nicotine in it it's no good. If you care to read how gvg blocks nicotine cravings, it's on the www.bnl.gov site, under gvg, 1998. You say you smoke because of stress, food cravings, to socialize, relax. Before you started smoking 20 years ago, did you have these cravings with stress, etc. I'd guess not. They are called 'enviromental cue cravings' and they raise dopamine 25% causing cravings with zero nicotine/drugs in body. Addiction is called a 'biochemical' brain disease. Science says the mind/body split is now dead, that thinking and brain function are not separate (this is key). The clinical trial subjects stayed in their drug infested neighborhoods during gvg treatment during trial and after and did not have desire to use, because gvg brought dramatically high brain dopamine levels down to normal.
I agree that people need to see and speak with others that have had this treatment. One of my kids asked me about this, but patient's privacy and all. There will hopefully be testimonials at some point, word will spread. I was told to just read the science articles, which I had done to no end and why finally understand treatment. By the way, not only nicotine raises dopamine causing addiction, but coffee and all caffeine raises it to to a small degree, keeping addiction going. The head scientist said that there will be psycosocial- counseling along with this treatment. I especially wanted people to know about this treatment so that if in a life-crisis could get help now at the Mexicali clinic or in England or Canada where it's available. All good things come through God and often it's a combination of prayer and action that is necessary. We live in a physical world and a spiritual world, both. Best wishes to you and your husband and partners nephew.

In all fairness Laurie .....when I first quit meth ......I had extremely bad cravings .....and anything that would have helped would have been nice . However ....now that I have clean time behind me I dont have cravings . Living life on it's terms, clean has been the battle .
The only relief for that , I have found is going to NA meetings, AA meetings and talking with others about our struggles . Admitting our addictions and addictive behaviour .
Seeking proffessional help was also important . I found myself drowning in my own depression . I am now getting an antidepressant that helps tremendously.
That is what I find so extremely helpful and beneficial about sites like this . Everyone has input , their own ideas, experiences , successes and failures . Through all this we will find our way ....

Al,
It's nice to hear from you. You bring valuable knowledge to this board about addiction and recovery, expressed so well, and that helps everyone. The message you wrote on feeling better with nutrition, vitamins, supplements was great. It's so important to keep body (blood vessels) in even slightly better shape in addiction, and to really help healing in recovery. I've learned a little as of late about a natural substance that is supposed to regenerate neurons, I have to check out what science has to say about it before I post. There are a few brain supplements out there. The body produces or needs thousands of various chemicals, we are complicatedly made! I printed your 'nutrition post' to show my kids. I think It's good you chose to be away from Ca., away from the hectic life here. I don't know what happened with those wedding plans, but the poster who said airport to wedding to airport made sense to me.
It's great that the antidepressant is helping. If you could share which one it is? Two of my meth addicts have tried a couple. I think we can all gather much insight from each others comments on this board, and thank God for this site.
I wish that we could hear from a few posters: Ice Queen, Charmed, Linda.
One day at a time Heals. Time is what finally healed my son and is a miracle, his Christianity helped greatly. He only uses coffee but has 'years' going for him. I told him the caffeine raises dopamine, and he won't take supplements so far. He's living a pretty darn good life now. Take care.........Laurie

Hi, First time visitor to this board and I am very interested in finding out more about GVG. I think that it goes without saying that there is no "miracle pill" that will alone facilitate getting clean. It would be naive to think that there could be such a thing. But for me and the situation I am in right now, the dope is destroying everything that means anything in my life and it's amazing how the "Addict" in a person can somehow justify continuing the useage even though they know, without question, that they are screwing up big time and that there WILL come a day, when they'll be kicking themselves in the butt for letting it get so out of control for so long.
I guess what I'm getting at here is:
I know that there will never be any one single cure-all, but if it can HELP keep me from turning into a narcoleptic, irratable, depressed, unruly, b**** from Hell while I finally dig my heels in and get clean, I AM ALL FOR IT!! I imagine if you also supplimented it with a good B multiple vitamin (among others) it might help take off the edge even more. Anything is welcomed even if it only gives the smallest bit of relief from the withdrawls.
You said a clinic in Mexicali? Do you have anymore info on that clinic that you can pass along? Thank you Laurie.

I have been taking Gabritrol for cocaine w/d, but it didn't help me the other day...it's easy to thinkg that a pill can cure you, but the addict has to want to quit, there's alot of mental things going on...the best thing is a doctor or clinic along with meetings...
Pismo Beach,
GVG is available at the clincal trial clinic in Mexicali. Treatment for 9 weeks.
The FDA approved clincal trials to be held in U.S. this past Jan., and it will take 'time' for GVG to be approved for public use in U.S. To learn about GVG, please go to WWW.BNL.GOV and search GVG. This is Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York. Phone numbers to their PET department are on website, also email addresses for scientists. Also, New York University has articles on GVG, and you could call or email them. I can't give out Mexicali phone number here, sorry. You'll learn much about GVG on these websites.

Thank you Laurie .... I am currently using Lexapro .....so far so good ..
Laurie,
I read many of the posts about GVG. I lost my husband to Meth. No, he did not die...yet...but the man I thought I married is lost.
The pain of watching him do this to himself, our families, and to us is indescribable.
While we were together he was taking Xenadrine (work-out and weight-loss pills that rev. you up) just to stay awake when partying or writing papers for his sister's college classes etc., smoking pot, and I have to admit that we both partied with way too many drinks. Since he started Meth. again (!), he has become emotionally cruel, manipulative, irresponsible, and verbally aggressive that it has become impossible for me to live with him. I'm sure anyone who is a loved one of a Meth. addict can attest to that.
I would have jumped at the chance of a pill that can relieve him from his cravings, but as many have said here, the cravings are just part of it. If he no longer craves Meth., he'll do something else in order to escape the reality of life.
I study psychology and have studied addiction for a while now. The pleasure effect of Meth. comes from increased release of dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is responsible for feeling pleasure, happiness, self-esteem, elation etc. After a while, the brain stops producing dopamine on its own and leaves the addict with feelings of hopelessness, deep depression, total loss of self-worth, suicidal thoughts etc. What GVG does, is the following:
GVG: "...These ... experiments have shown that GVG can block drug-induced increases in brain dopamine (a chemical associated with reward and pleasure, which is elevated by all addictive drugs) drug-seeking behavior, drug self-administration and sensitization, and drug craving even that triggered by environmental cues."
This site also states: "The success rate achieved in this small study 8 out of 20 remaining in the trial and drug-free is comparable to that of other experimental cocaine addiction treatment protocols. But the prolonged duration of abstinence far exceeds what other pharmacological treatments have achieved, said Dr. Frank Vocci, Director, Division of Treatment Research and Development, National Institute on Drug Abuse."
This is the website where you can read the entire study and its results: http://www.bnl.gov/bnlweb/pubaf/pr/....asp?prID=03-70
So, everyone read it, critically, for yourselves.
Love and prayers to everyone who is an addict or loves one,
Sylgem
