Hello everyone...thanks for being there!
I have a son that just came out of ER due to alcohol related seizures.
While he was in, they put him thru detox and he is currently in a rehab program but is experiencing what I believe is called PAWS.
Whenever I do an internet search on the topic the symptoms look pretty radical.
After detox he's already experienced several seizures as well as several episodes of incoherent talking as well as crazy (not violent or life threatening) behavior....which all fit the description of PAWS symptoms.
HERE'S MY QUESTIONS...
1. For those here that are sober and in a program...did you experience PAWS and how bad was it and how long did it last?
2. For those with loved ones that are now sober...any advice for guys like me in helping to cope with my sons PAWS?
He has a doctors appointment in about 10 days as well as a neurologists appointment (in case it's really something else)
Thanks everyone!
Rich
At about 60 days sober, I did experience Paws, but it was not severe. Primarily I was extremely hyper, had trouble sleeping and concentrating especially at work. I even went to my psychiatrist to make sure my sobriety hadn't unleashed bipolarity. But no, I didn't test for that. He offered a mood stabilizer but I decided to wait a few months and it did subside.
Keep in touch with your addiction medical professionals and suggest he share about it in meetings. Best to you both.

I realized I didn't share what helped me through my Paws. First of all - kind to myself. Second - I got some guided meditation apps for my phone and that helped me learn to calm myself down. Third - I started getting a little more exercise, simple walking. Of course my symptoms were different from your son's. Glad he's getting checked out.
