I have a question for those who are on methadone. I have been on methadone for 6 mons and i stopped getting my period like 3 mons ago. I t just stopped. i know i'm not pregnant and my recent pap smear was fine. i don't wan't to tell my gyno (she's not exactly thrilled about methadone) my question is has anyone expierenced this? will my cycle return? does this last till i get off methadone? if any one has any insight i would appriciate it. i hope you are all doing well in your recovery, and happy 4th too all! Jenn - my cycle stopped due to depression i was 40 years old - asked to get tests done to see if it was menapause - negative - just giving you little background on some reason cycle can stop - it also can stop if you have lost lots of weight - i.e under body height weight - dont know anything about the meths though - someone will im sure - just trying to let you know some other reasons it can happen.

I don't think it's menapause i'm only 26. and i haven't had any wieght loss or depression. the nurse told me that a few people at the clinic have expeirenced this , but thats all she said. I know you can screw up your cycle from abusing pills/heroin. you said you stopped because of depression, did it ever come back? thanks , have a good day -Jen

Don't worry, Methadone, Oxycontin and other opiates, can stop a women's cycle. If everything went well with your pap, it should be fine. I did not have a period for almost a year, lost alot of weight, (and I was in my early 30's). Take care and Good luck.

Happy 4th to you too.. I just got on this message board today. About your period. I have been on methadone for two years and it has been a miracle for me. Not to say I havent had some problems with side effects but at least have not used pain pills or any other drug for that matter since April of 2002. About your period, I stopped having mine after being on the meth for 2 mos. 4 mos ago, I thought I should start to slowly detox off the meth. My original dose was 90mgspr day, and I detoxed down to 10 mgs. Once I got to 20 mgs though Igot my period back with a vengenance. Anyway it will probably stop again though because I started feeling so bad (depression and severe lethargy) my counselor and I decided I should go back up to 45 mgs and stay there for awhile. I hate that I have to go back up but I made the decision I would rather deal with the meth than have to feel what I was feeling. I wouldnt wish that on my worse enemy. Anyway I didnt miss having my period at all. I kinda hoped it had gone away for good but no such luck!!! Let me know what happens ok? Also if anybody has any thoughts on their experience with methadone especially dealing with guilt feelings of staying on it or anything positive to say about your methadone experience it would be greatly appreciated. I have had a difficult time dealing with family members particularly my mom about my meth treatment. They have no addictive bones in their body. Any advise would help.. I feel I am constantly trying to help her understand why I am the way I am, probably more to my detriment because I have been trying for years thinking one day she will get it.....HELP......

honey b and out of- once again thank you for responding. iyou have put me at ease a little, so i guess i will wait and see. i guess i shouldn't be complaining most women would love to have this problem. i wanted to call me gyno but she's didn't seem to excited when i told her i was on it. i guess i'm worried she might say i should stop, and i couldn't do that right now. methadone has saved my life... i have it back for one. and with out it i don't know where i'd be right now. i'm so glad I put that nightmare behind me and without methadone that wouldn't be possible. i wanted to get back to you (honey) i went through a similar thing w/ my dad and methadone. he was totally against it and had convinced the rest of the family as well so it made it ten times worse for me to decide to seek meth treatment. but now that they see the complete turnaround i have made there all for it. he still has his little annoying comments like "gee how long do you have to keep doing this"? "when are you gonna get off"? it's little comments like that , that set me back. and sometimes i question my motives. but the truth is i don't care how long i'm on it, it works for me and thats all that matters. have you tried giving your mom any of the pamphlets? does your clinic offer counsling for family? all i can say is if you continue to stay clean and be productive the methadone will speak for itself. she'll see how much you've chanjed so hopefully over time she'll realize that it's helping not hurtting. well i wish you luck, if you wan't to talk further my email is below. let me know how things work out. just remember why you started methadone,and why you stay on methadone.
