I am starting Antabuse, and the list of all the food products you can't have, due to vinegar content has me more upset than using no alcohol. From salad dressings to mustard, all kinds of Chinese stir fry sauces, canned hot peppers and salsas, I am even worried about eating out and not knowing exactly what is in it. It seems to me that there must be very small amounts of vinegar in these things, and I don't think it could cause that much of a reaction. Has anyone on antabuse eaten any of these things in small amounts and gotten sick? I would appreciate anybody's experiences or knowledge about this. Thanks
Good Morning
I'm not sure if you are on antabuse because you want to be or because your doctor thinks you need to be. But I think and this is only my opinion. what is more important to you the fact tjhat you can't eat a few items that you like or the fact that you are dealing with your alcohol problem. If you are on antbuse, it sounds like you don't trust your self or others don't trust youand there are more ways to gain ythatself respect and trust back without taking the medication.
With knowledge and a good support system you can beat anything. Knowleged that you want to quit drinking and how to take the steps to do that. A good ref is the AA big Book.I'm not trying to recuit you as amember but it will anwer some questions for you in the stories. I found my self in alot of those stories and realized that i was alike alot of those people in the book. The book also suggest a way to beat the problem. It will take a bit of work on your part and you can work at your own speed with who ever you want.
Doctors and Shrinks are good for only some of the things that may be troubling you but they have no idea unless they are in recovery them selves how you feel and what you may be going through.
Another booklet available at any AA chapter is a Book called living Sober. It is easier and my more practical to your needs.
I never took antabuse. I stopped drinking in 1999. You just get to a point in your life where you will do anything to wake up from feeling sick and tired of being sick and tired. The rewrads are endless. Set your goals small and enjoy life. Find a confidant that you can speak to and start sharing your feelings. Also welcome back to life.

Thanks Roy for your reply,
Actually the antabuse is a requirement for me. I got into treatment because I got into trouble for being on the job intoxicated. I am a nurse and as a result was reported to the licensing board, and was referred to the Michigan Health Professional Recovery Corp., which will assist me in retaining my license if I comply with treatment. They told me that in order to return to work, I have to be on Antabuse, at least for a while. Anyway, I know that I shouldn't be putting other concerns before my recovery. I was pretty much forced into treatment, but I knew long before that I did need help. I do attend AA, I have a Big Book, and am looking to buy the living sober book. I am 5 weeks into treatment, and now realize how much it helps, even though I was very unhappy about it and truly doubting it's benefit. Anyway thankyou. It is people like you, who have maintained sobriety that give the rest of us hope. Kim

I take antabuse as well as I have an additional mental health disorder that from time to time tends to endanger my sobriety. It helps me greatly at times of deep depression when I may just not care. I have no desire even when deeply depressed to experience antabuse reaction.
I however have never heard of having to avoid vinegar. French fries are not edible to me without it and genoerous salting. I have had no untowards effects at all from ingesting plain white vinegar but I wouldn't dare attempt to use a wine vinegar. I have ingested mustard eaten with complete abandon all kinds of chinese food ect.. Hope this helps. By the way antabuse is my choice and I will go to any lengths to stay sober. Take care.

I tried antebuse some years ago. It was very unpleasant. I still craved a drink. Was very sick the whol time. Just feels like more poison in your system. Better to go forward with support groups like AA. and face it head on.
