hi janet
you had posted about your cold and zicam...
now i have a cold :(
i saw my therapist on thurs. she was sooo sick, she must of blown her nose 12 times and there was this stack of used kleenex she laid on the chair between us, she said she didnt want to sit too close too me... i made certain not to touch my eyes or mouth and washed my hands real good after the appt. next day is when the symptoms started. i was wondering what the incubation period of a cold is, how soon after being exposed does one get a cold? i tried to google it but computer was so slow that day!!!!
anyway what is zyrtec that you posted about?
i cant smell or taste a thing! we just ordered a pizza hut pizza and it tasted like i was eating air! julie
are you better? how your sinuses and head aches?

JANET
good morning, you seem to be a wealth of info for me today....
since i saw dr. yesterday because of fever and brochitis, that quit smoking topic came up again., he said that chantix is similar to sub about how the drugs effect our receptors in our brains and when i told him that all my medications are covered EXCEPT this one drug chantix, he said it wouldn't cost anymore than what you would have spent on cigarettes. hmmm, that got me to thinking...
let me give this a try again.
can i ask how much you paid for yours? our pharmacy is saying $113.00, or i might protest the insurance co. since i have diabetes
how many refills do you have to get:? what is the length of treatment.? thanks janet. do you think its doable.?

Hi Jewls!
Let's see, I started feeling yucky on a Thursday, picked up the Zicam on Friday and started to use it. By Tuesday I was getting a terrible headache and I had it for 4 days, by the third day I decided to stop it, because the headache was making me miserable. The headache lingered for 2 days after, it felt like sinus so I took the Zyrtec which is used for, the congestion and allergies. I took it for another four days. I am still having a sore throat but my sinuses are draining. I think I'm probably better off getting the cold and getting all of the mucous out of my head.
As for the Chantix, I paid $24 for the first scrip which has some .5mg pills in it, the first week you are supposed to take 1 for 4 (?) days and then you up it to .5 twice a day. The second week you are taking 1mg twice a day, you are supposed to quit on the second week. Towards the end of the first week you will find that you are putting your cigs out because you aren't really getting the pleasure out of it. My insurance covers the scrip, I got a scrip for 90 and I paid $35.
Let me bring up my quit post and you can get a better idea.

hey janet
thanks, i just read your quit smoking post...
it sounds so encouraging, being soooo sick right now and still smoking is absolutely disgusting! this is my addictive pesonality kicking in. i know i have substituted one addiction for the other because quitting pills in july has caused my smoking and pepsi consumption to double! why cant i just have normal behaviors and thoughts that are healthy?? i dont know about what it feels like to live or behave in a healthy way. this ole body is gonna give up one of these days, i cannot believe the abuse my body and brain have endured.
having a severe case of bronchitis and smoking despite, really disgusts me...bui cant help myself, it curbs my anxiety, yeah this anxiety is gonna be a killer too one of these days. but i am happy that the pills are gone today.i KNOW that i can only handle one addicition at a time.
there are these mexican tortilla chips called el ranchero, i am so addicted to them, they are kinda thick and brittle, it must be the salt why i am craving them, anyway, i have broken 3 teeth in one month !!!!!! 2 had to be crowned, and do i quit???? of course not!!!
i was told after having a life threatening kidney stone incident in nov 05, that i was to avoid oxalates which are found in cola's and brocolli etc. do i quit?? of course not!!!!
my second addiction lately is hostess snowballs!!! i love them!!! and i am a diabetic.....i cannot believe how out of control i have becomel
any way janet thanks for your inspiration...
only one thing janet i am worried , i was thinking please God let this chantix not be constipating... sub has me sooo constipated, it was so bad, i have done stool softeners, fibersure, prunes, rectal suppostitories .... hard as a rock! i followed some of atlas girls advice: activa yogurt and flax seed oil capsules... increased my fiber, prescription zelnorm and mirolax and one more cant think of the name of it, but to no avail! it will soften up and i think yeah!
than it resorts back to hard again.
were you ever on the sub/chantrix combination???
i have met so many obstacles..... jewels

No sub for me. I still have problems "going". I am trying to eat more salad and apples and I take a stool softener daily. I will be happy when I can stop the Chantix, but I am going to get my second refill and then I will have about 7 months off the nicotine. The longer I stay away from the cigs the better. I've been thinking about smoking the past two days, though I know I will get nothing from inhaling that poison. I am going to buy some of that Plum Smart that I see advertised on TV, I hope that it will work...I'll give you an update.
You will still think about smoking once you quit, but the urges get further and further apart. This is my first real craving..not so much for the nicotine, but maybe it's the comfort of that hand to mouth action.

I'm going to stay on it another 3 or so months. The dr gave me a scrip for 3 months and I am going to have to get some more in a few weeks.
Plumsmart is a new fruit juice. Though I'm thinking maybe I should buy some prunes and prune juice, I love them both.
I've even resorted to Milk of Magnesia, but I am very sensitive to laxatives, I will end up totally opposite, could never take one pill, I had to split them up.

Janet..have you had any bad side effects from the Chanix? Like headaches, weight gain? Any other things that come from quitting...just wondering...I am seriously thinking of this med....I do have a supply of the patches and have quit before using them...but....just looking at the options.
Problem with the patch is you have to take it off prior to exercise..I have been running and know that I end up taking it off...then putting it back on...it half sticks...I put scotch tape on it..but it inevitably falls off...and slowly I start back up with the cigs...lol...
Chanix sounds like a great idea

I've had some weight gain, probably about 5 lbs. I've never had a headache, but Stacey (24 Gordon) says that she is having them. Other than weird dreams the first couple weeks I started on them and ongoing constipation, I've had no problems.
I tried the patch, it makes me break out..I used the Commit, but ended up smoking again...I think I'm on day 77 without even a puff.

Sorry to "butt in" lol but when it comes to quitting smoking I am all there for anyone trying. I quit many moons ago (over 20 years) but I still remember how difficult it was. I made many attempts, the longest I made it was 3 weeks when I thought I could be a "sociable" smoker. Wrong. I finally quit when I was pregnant and havent had one since. I made many attempts before I finally succeeded and to this day I swear it is my proudest achievement. I get mad at myself sometimes when I cant stick to an exercise program or when I add back on those pounds, but the single best thing one can do for thier health, I believe is to quit smoking. Easier said than done but just keep at it. You will succeed.Chantrix sounds like a great tool. Pat yourself on the back for each smokeless day you have. Tell yourself you dont want to blow your winning streak. There is not one positive effect or reason for cigarettes. They are sneaky little devils only here to make tobacco companies rich and rob us of our health. List all the bad things and and tell them to yourself every day: Aside from all the health problems - heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, emphyzema, chronic bronchitis, most cancers, they also make you smell (and not pretty), wrinkle your skin, yellow your teeth, and cost a fortune to boot. Each time they try to mess with your head, fight back with all the reasons not to as mentioned above.
Donna you are so right!
I'm in the "once is too many, a thousand never enough" state of mind...it's an addiction.

Janet,
Just give this your best shot ever. With all this time behind you, please dont let it go just to inhale cancer ingredients into your lungs. How do you feel? Do you have more energy? I remember I was always clearing my throat, and caught colds and sore throats like nobodies business Over the years boy has that all changed. I have none of that horseness, clearing of throat, and I RARELY get colds. But the bottom line on cigarettes, aside from all the other negatives mentioned, is they shorten your life. We jog, meditate, do yoga, eat tofu (well not me lol but many) in the quest for a healthy long life when the FIRST thing we have to do is quit smoking. The rest of those things are secondary to the harmfulness of cigarettes. It is the single best thing we can do for our health. Its about time they came up something like this Chantrix!

When I first started the Chantix I also went to the dr and started on Omacor (prescription fish oil) and Crestor....I went and was retested in the first week of December and my cholesterol level was cut in half. I didn't know that smoking raises your cholesterol, but it does.
If I didn't have pain I would be doing great. It is such a freedom to not have to go outside in the cold with my robe, winter jacket and blanket wrapped around my head in order to make myself cough and hack. I can smell that nasty ashtray smell when my son goes out to smoke and it is nasty!
