Question

Hi everyone,

I've come over from the heroin board to say hi and to see what you think about something.

I smoke pot every day, mostly a few cones when I get home from work and a couple when I wake up in the morning. I don't spend all day smoking and it doesn't occupy all my thoughts all day like heroin does. I hardly even miss it if I'm away and it's not around.

Am I addicted? Is smoking pot like that really a problem? I'd like to hear what people have to say. I know a lot of people here are giving up after many many years of smoking. I've been smoking pot only for around 8 months or so.

Thanks everyone,
Rachel :)
Rachel, I frequent the pain pill board for the most part. I was involved with this forum many years go when it was just starting. I came up in the 70s and did all the drugs that were popular in the day: pot, acid, speed, MDA, Quaaludes, etc.

The 80s came along and I tried to clean up my act, settling for old Scotch, connoisseur grade pot and very good flake cocaine. As you can tell by that last sentence, I was an elitist snob in my using. It was one of the ways I tried to convince myself that I did not have a problem.

In the late 80s I started bottoming out. I cut out the coke without much assistance, but I turned heavily to pot. I bottomed on pot and minored in alcohol.

Lots of coke and heroin addicts have gone on the marijuana maintenance program. Many have found long term recovery and in that process, realized that pot is just another crutch. Those lucky few have gone on to live clean and sober. Be assured, pot is addictive, and as an addict, you probably are addicted. I will grant you that it is a huge improvement from H, but it is addictive.

Pot users are often functional, in that they hold jobs, and go about their daily lives pretty normally, but like any other drug, in time, it stops working as it should, and then all the addictive qualities come roaring back. Long term pot smokers are often very unhappy. Addiction rarely makes a person more happy or outgoing.

No doubt you will hear from several pot smokers who will defend their denial by telling you that pot is harmless. For the most part, they are in denial. Fact is, if you are reading posts on a board devoted to marijuana addiction, the odds are pretty good that you have a pot addiction.

Sorry to rain on your parade. Drop in more on the pain pill board. We have a lot of good folks over there, and we can talk about getting clean (this means with no drugs or alcohol in your body, including pot) and living sober (this means without having the obsession to use).

Hang in there,

August
is it firm?
Hey Rachel,

If you don't feel as if you're addicted to pot, then STOP NOW!!! I smoked like that for years, never thinking that I was addicted. Make no mistake about it, it definitely IS addictive! After many years and eliminating all of my other "vices" (alcohol, cigarettes..), I am giving up the ganja for good! I wish I'd done it years ago, with more brain cells intact. I got to the point where the guilt, memory loss, & paranoia made me feel like I was losing my mind!! If it doesn't yet have a grip on you, get free while it's still easy! You can do it! Take care, and all the best with your recovery.
