Recovery For Those Who Are Not Religious

What are your thoughts. Does it work? Can it work?

I need help but I'd feel like a fraud if I went against all my beliefs and 'Found God'. I have read James Frey's memoir and was inspired by his ability to recover without having to believe in God etc. When I found out the book was a sham I took it hard.
Read this chapter from the Big Book. It may help.

..I do not believe in jesus..im a heroin addict in recovery..i,ve been 4 mths clean
although i don,t doubt other peoples ways and beliefs in life and in their recovery..i do believe that it is ourselves and those around us who support us that help us stay clean..it is our own strength that keeps us in recovery..if others want to pray for help with their addictons..all well and good to them..but never doubt your own strength and willpower in yourself in staying clean...
good luck..Robbie..

Atheist recovery is about you and what ACTIONS you take daily. Recovery is about change.

Recovery is admitting we have character defects and are willing to go to any length to stay make changes and stay sober one day at a time.

A belief in God has nothing to do with how YOU decide to run your life.

Take care--Jeff

The 12 step program I am a member suggests that you get a "God" (Higher Power than yourself) of your own understanding. It doesn't have to be what one thinks of a religious deity...it can be G.O.D., "Group of Drunks" or whatever you choose, just something greater than yourself.
Atheist

I once heard about a couple of people who where going to start a prayer line for atheists. When you dialled the number nothing would happen. That sounds like a lonely place to me. Only believing in oneself .

When I was the director in my life my life was just a down hill spiral .and it wasnt until I found a new director a Higher Power whom I choose to call God today that I found piece of mind. Instead of having a mind in pieces.

I am not a religious person an I believe in a God of my understanding. Maybe I can talk about that more later. Today I actually have piece of mind. I am no longer sick and tied of being sick and tied. I am in my dreams awake living life to its fullest without alcohol and drugs.

Are you in recovery from Alcohol or Other Drugs?

If you believe in willpower. Then next time you have Diarrhoea use your willpower to stop from going to the toilet. If you can do that then you have willpower. but I dont like your chances. Its the same as trying to use willpower to stop drinking or taking drugs if youre a real alcoholic or addict. I needed a physic change.

In the beginning I to prayed with disbelief but I prayed with sincerity (I wanted to change) and after awhile the belief came for me ,because I am in a fellowship where you see miracles every day.

Atheist if your problem is alcohol Alcoholics Anonymous may be able to help you and the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. not wether you believe in a God or not.

Robbie this is only a question from a person who may be ignorant to recovery from heroin. But when you say you are four months clean. Does that mean youre free from all mood altering drugs? That you are straight and living in reality and not dependant on other drugs other than heroin. This is only a question nothing more. I think its a miracle your been heroin free for 4 months.Congradulations and keep it up.Whatever works for you.

..Atheist..
..Yes..i am clean from all drugs and medications..legal or illegal..I just feel people some people should believe in themselves more...good luck..Robbie..

GOD AS I UNDERSTAND HIM

Atheist

There is a chapter in the Big Book "We Agnostics" that may help you some.

I struggled with this too when I first came into recovery. A woman friend of mine told me if I could create my own H.P. what characteristics would IT have. I pulled out a peice of paper and wrote down several things. She said there ya go, a GOD of your understanding. It doesn't have to be a "religious" thing or what someone elses understanding is, its whatever I UNDERSTAND it to be and its MY GOD. I am powerless, so something has to have the power over my life.

I can't
HE can
I'll let him

steps 1,2,3 (short version)

I would recommend a "close study of the book Alcoholics Anonymous"
