Relapse Prevention Ideas

Hey ya'll the posts here have great stuff. Thanks for taking the time to share, you truly do open my eyes reading your posts and thinking back on the years I have been using Hydro and other pain meds. Your words are sincerely appreciated. By others I'm sure. Learning from others is such a great formatt.
Being new to this site I can say anyone new here should make reading the many posts and writing honest posts as a great relapse prevention recovery tool.
Because of my chronic pain and still dissabling back and knee problems I (with DR Psych pain management) am on Meth after years of Hydro and it's friends, from a Family Doc who just had no clue that writing scripts for 360 to 700 Hydro
pills a month might be harmful. He knew I was sobeer from alcohol thus was an addict. He just smiled and said sure, here, whatever I asked for almost. Yes, I
could have refused but "come-on", my addicted diseased brain was in control.
Detoxing from 10/500mg Hydros, 20/30 or so a day stopped working at all and my back pain kept me hoping the next handful would help. Never did. Finaly my
psych Doc put me on Meth. Now with my dearest wife (of 32 happy years - Oh I know how lucky I am) she gives me a few as she goes off to work, hides a couple more and keeps a couple for after work. Don't say it - I'd do the same for her. My addicted diseased brain needed some assistance. Thank God 4 her.
May I just throw in one other thing, because of depression, PTSD ect my Doc had tried all the common ones, Zoloft, Paxil, etc., but finaly we tried Zyprexa & Celexa and for the past 2 1/2 years I have gotten my life back. I mention it incase someone is searching and has a Psych Doc they can talk with. Sure
would hgave liked to have found this one a half dozen + years ago.
Sorry if I got too windid hear, I'll work at that. Love & good wishes to all.
Any comments . . . Grampa Allen
Hi Granpa Allen

I to am going through the stage that i take so many hydros for so long they do nothing for my pain. My dr. asked me if i would like to try methadone or ativan instead. right away this scares me because of my addictive behavior. but i have the script for the ativan i haven't tried it yet. Does the meth work on pain could this be my way off the hydros? any input will help thanks.

Bridget
Bridget, the meth is wayyy harder to get off of than the hydro. Ive never been on meth but Ive heard plenty of stories from people here on the site. I know its a tough choice when your in pain.
Hope you find something that works for you.

What about the Ativan (its a low dose of morphine) its supposed to be 1 24 hr time release pill. do you or anyone know anything about this one?

Bridget
You sure its ativan, I thought ativan was a benzo for anxiety. Ill have to look it up to make sure.

Your right, I'm sorry, its called Avinza.

Bridget
Bridget, I think no matter what you take its addcitive, but you have to make the decision for yourself based on quality of life. Some people have to be on some sort of painkiller all the time in order to function normally. Most of us here on the board were on some pill for pain and once the pain went away we kept taking the pills but we could live without them once we got off.

Good luck

Thanks for you input. Its going to be trial an error for me. But i have to get off these Norcos. I was told by my Dr. that the Avinza is a very low dose, 30mg, and will not get me high but will take care of the pain. (For 24hrs I doubt it but thats what he says) Well I'm on board for the Easter Plunge so theres know way out now. After 4 years of hydro I really want out. Even to actually evaluate my pain I just recently realized that a lot of my pain is actually from taking all these Norcos for soo long after 3hrs of a dose my legs (rls) are severely hurting. Especially in the morning So hopefully after some time off these pills I may not need so much medication.
GrandpaAllen,
Just wanted to thank you for sharing your wisdom strength and hope with all of us on 'Success Stories'...i was the first one to post mine...having been clean from alcohol going on a month short of 18 yrs now thru the rooms of AA. I started a thread a couple of weeks ago asking if it was just me wondering why not more many sober addicts are coming forward to share their success stories to maybe help others who are still suffering. As i mentioned in my thread....you can't keep what you've earned unless you keep giving it away and getting it back again twofold by continuing to share it with others.

Dont take ativan, thats a very addictive tranquiller. Won't do anything for pain. Methadone will help for pain. Meth isnt hard to come off if you do it properly so dont worry. One person said its hard cause they did it the wrong way and then everyone else starts preaching the same song and they haven't even tried it..

Take care.
Granpa Allen,

Your words ring very true to me. I now have my husband hold my pain meds for chronic back and a plate n my neck problems. He has helped alot. Not as good as your wife but pretty okay. U sound like a amazing man to drop down to that many pain meds after so long. Maybe there is hope.

I am trying to wean from some xanex also at this time. But at least I am trying again.

Good Luck and
God Bless

bridget, hi. Methadone has been both the best pain pill I've taken to date and after a near dozen surgeries including 24 screw implants in my back and 2 total knee replacements I have tried them all. And since taking 20 to 30 Vics a day
with pain relief eventualy being nonexsistant the 6 meths are much more manageable. (I luckily have a wonderful wife who distributes my pills). I also do
contribute being at a better place, in part, due to my Zyprexa and my Psych Doc
helping me with my pain management. I tell him everything. Hope you are
able to get a handle on your pain (and what kind- cause I forget if u mentioned it)
I am here if you need to chat more. These posts are so helpful, keep reading and writing.
GrandpaAllen
Kiwirain You are so right. Detoxing from Meth is not hard as long as - with a doctors care you do it correctly. I have hear both sides but I know when I get ready to stop I'll take my time and do it right and slow. After years of surgeries not very helpful pain pill relief and now finding Meth that actually helps, even allows me to sleep because the pills half/life lets you sleep, I wouldn't worry about detox considering the alternatives, ya know.
Grandpa Allen
bridget I meant to say I don't have any knowledge or experience with the other drugs you mentioned. Lots of knowledge about mental health and things like Psychiatric Hospitals etc but not much about addiction to tranquilizers etc. I do
swear by my new found Zyprexa & Celexa though. Look around the site I've seen some good helpful posts from others. I just wanted to share that.
Have a good day/night.
Gramps
Hi ya'll again. Happy Easter, best wishes. Thanks JohnDee, aliasMary and others for the kind words and great imput. KYRA too, glad your hubby is helping my wife literally made the diffference in my cutting down. Don't know what I'd do
today with out her giving me my daily routine. With 180 given me a month I'd never not take a few extra a day if I was on my own. When I was getting 700 5mg Vics or 360 10mg I had my Walgreen hand me out a weeks supply at a time and that was helpful. Even had my Doc write out my scripts for two weeks until insurance said uh uh. But if you realy want something there is always
a way. Gadds knows I've not had a big prob getting me my pain meds for over a decade when I wanted more, so it's just reversing the direction.
Again, thanks to all the posts, how is every/anyone doing?
Gramps
KYRA just wondering, if you have a moment and don't mind sharing, What kind of back pain do you suffer with. Just curious but won't feel badly if it is not something you care to share, I truly understand. Anyone else reading this post who might share their back pain and operations. I'm again contimplating operation and just looking to hear what others may say. . . .
GrampaAllen

Happy Easter to you. Your presents here has been wonderful for everyone. You asked about back problems. I ruptured a disc in my lower back ( L4-5 ) I was told I needed an operation now. I didn't want to be cut at that time. Looking back I wish I would have got it done. I had trouble walking, sitting, standing Etc. The thing that really scared me was my left leg would tingle, go to sleep, and them I lost feeling in it for a couple of hours. And I still didn't get the operation. This laster about 6 mos. and gradually got better. Now from time to time, I get a sharp pain in my back and down my leg but it only lasts a day or so. I do know the day is comimg when it will come and not go away.

Thanks for your support and the experience you bring to this board.

Hi Grandpa Allen!!
I loved your post! And yes, as a newbie here, I have been reading and reading...and posting and posting! (LOL) I never knew words from another could help one with an addiction, but they have. I guess I was feeling I was the only one out there addicted to pain pills (even though I knew better), maybe I should have said I thought I was the only one out there who was willing to admit it and try to get some help on-line. :) I now see I am not aloone in this up-hill, rough, tough battle.
Yes Grandpa, you definitely were taking alot of pills everyday. I could have been taking more (I did take a good many Vicodin's at one time) but I savored every one until the last minute before taking another...and another.
Also wanted to say...you have a wonderful wife! Congrats on being happily married for so many years! That is so great. :)
I hope you and her both had a wonderful Easter and also hope to read more of your posts in the future. :)
