Runners' Exercise Addiction?

Have friend who is into exercise & body-building for so much time, to the detriment of his family life. Is there such an addictive disorder? Does it have a name? Thanks. - Ed
Dear Ed:
Yes there is a condition called Exercise Addiction. It is considered a psychological and/or physical dependence on a regular regime of exercise characterized by withdrawal symptoms after 24 to 36 hours. Withdrawal symptoms can include anxiety, irritability, guilt, and muscle twitching. Not being able to exercise can cause severe depression as well as problems at home, work, and with relationships.

The following are some strategies that I have read about that can help avoid an exericse addiction.
1. Keep the exercise regimen to around 3-4 times a week, maybe 30-60 minutes for each session. In this way, the person can avoid the everyday exercise typical of exercise addicts.
2. Train with hard and easy days. Alternating low-intensity with high-intensity workouts can keep the body from breaking down and also keep things in the proper perspective.
3. Try to find a partner to work out with who is not obsessed with exercise. This will keep the exerciser from becoming overly obsessed and help him or her stay more realistic.
4. Make sure to schedule rest days as part of the exercise regimen. This will allow the body to recuperate and keep the person from exercising when hurt and tired.
5. When the exerciser is injured, make sure that he or she has fully recovered before beginning to exercise again.
6. Set realistic short-and long-term goals.
