My 16 year old son will be coming home from rehab soon. We've removed all alcohol from the house and have locked up any prescription meds. But what about over the counter drugs? Should we just get rid of everything? Or is there a list somewhere of safe OTC drugs? Where can we find this info?
I can't answer that question, and please do not take this wrong, but short of locking him in a padded room, you can't shield him from the world. It would be very easy for him to gain access to any drug or drink or OTC medication.
Whether he is at home or elsewhere.
If he has been in rehab then he has tools to help keep him clean and that any OTC meds, ie Tylenol, midols, etc should not be an issue. They can't be abuse or shall I say depending on the medication you have around the house, what his Drug of Choice was, I really would not worry about it.
Getting the pain meds and alcohol out of the house is smart idea, but then again what is going to happen when he goes out in the real world. Alcohol is sold at every corner.
Was his problem with drugs or drinking or both? He has to want to stay clean.
Is he in any type of program? After care meaning AA or NA or counseling?
I know that pharmacies now keep OTC medications behind the counter and people must sign for them but I couldn't tell you what meds require signatures.
Call the pharmacist and ask them.
I see he is 16, what about school? Did he get the drugs there? He can't buy alcohol so that shouldn't be an issue unless people buy it for kids these days.
Or mandatory drug testing? This may keep him accountable in terms of not wanting to test positive for fear of repercussions.
Is he home schooled? Or can he be until he has some solid clean time under his belt?
Good luck with your son.
