Safe To Taper With Ultrams? Please Help

Thanks, Silent one...
I have taken Ultram and found that it helped me immensely, yes at one point in my life I was in grey exile with narcotic pain killers, but I don't do those anymore. Once in a great while, I will get Tramadol to help with the immense pain, but other than that I had no problems with them.

Humbly,
Blah
Again, I shall post this.

No, Tramadol is not an opiate. It is, however, an opiod (i.e a synthetic opiate), and in the SAME chemical class as METHADONE, which is definitely considered an "opiate". It is a opiate mu receptor agonist (albeit not the strongest one) and its mechanism of pain killing is the SAME as any other opiate.

Upon sufficient dosage over sufficient time, physcial habituation will occur. Abrupt cessation of this drug will produce the same withdrawal symptoms as any other opiate.

So, in short, Tramadol is an opiate. Why the FDA has not moved this up to Schedule III is a great mystery. Do you have any ideas why, Silent Partner?

This recovering addict wouldn't touch that stuff with a 10 foot pole, or any other length pole for that matter.....
I really dont know much about how the FDA works, b t I wouldnt classify Tramadol as the same category as Methadone.

I do agree that addicts should avoid Tramadol in almost all instances.
Whoops,

Silent Partner, you are right, Tramadol is not in the same chemical class as methadone, I was getting it confused with l-alpha-Acetylmethadol (LAAM) which is a cogener of methadone, along with propoxyphene. Looked up the chemical structures of both methadone and Tramadol and they are in different classes.

That being said, just because it has a different structure doesn't mean it can't be an opiod. Demerol and Fentanyl belong to the piperidine analgesic group but they are definitely considered "opiods", methadone to yet another chemical class yet it, too, is considered an opiod.

Tramadol could now be considered to be a new chemical class of synthetic opiods , just like Demerol and Methadone. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, its a duck. The FDA should definitely be bumping up its schedule.
you are right on the opioids.. being an Aussie I can't comment the FDA, I have enough trouble with our TGA.
An Aussie eh?

Hey I just saw on the Weather Channel last night, it was looking pretty warm down there right now. (Summer for you guys, I know). Darwin, Perth, Alice Springs were all pushing 90. Where is Australia do you live?

P.S What is the TGA? What do those letters stand for? Do you have an equivalent of the DEA as well?
Melbourne, it was 95 (35 Centigrade) here yesterday
Hi Guys I post just from what that drug did to me.I dont have a world of knowledge like Silent, but i do know what hell I went through.so I guess thats all.I think its only right to hear from someone first hand on how it effected them.Thanks/////mj
Wow, 95 degrees! I hope you are not melting! My spouse is a high school teacher and one of his coworkers is from Melbourne. I didn't know it got that warm down there. It this normal?

and molly jean , your post is the most important of all. Talk of chemical classes is fine and all, but peoples' eyes tend to get glazed over. Your post is the most important one to show that Tramadol, indeed, is a "duck".
MJ you rock!

TGA is Therapeutic Goods Adminstration, our Commonwealth Law Enforcement Agencies are responsible for overseeing what the DEA does in the USA
Thank you both. Now that its been almost a year without them I hope that somehow I can help stop someone else from going through that hell.
As for the both of you I truley value your knowledge also.Thank You again....mj

My purported knowledge should NOT be confused with wisdom. That is whole 'nuther critter. I am still a work in progress in that subject. Talk to me in 10 years and I will tell you if I feel I have improved in that category....
Elim I think WE ALL could use more wisdom. It is something that can help us grow into stronger people in general. My big probaly is what I gave up to get this personal knowledge.years I cannot get back, but Im learning not to dwell on that.I change what I can & accept what I cant.At the end of the day Im stronger for it...mj
