Smashed

This is the title of a book that I read...very good. The author is a young woman in her 20s who began drinking at 14...Koren Zailckas. I am 6 months sober from many substances. Alcohol is everywhere and I'm a caterer, so I pour it all the time. I can't believe how many people who are just "social drinkers" drink until they are plastered. Don't all binge drinkers have a problem with alcohol? I just think a lot of people who consider themselves social drinkers are just using the word to mean binge drinking in a group. What do you all think? This drug is the most pushed of any and to stay sober in this country from alcohol is a real accomplishment. CAS.
Some people I think have more a suseptibilty to alcoholism than others, so it is hard to say who is alcoholic and who is not just based on how much they drink.

That is best left up for that person to decide themselves anyhow.

I think that if WHEN you drink, you get drunk, it is a problem. I have a cousin who is a binge alcoholic. He can go months without touching a drop, but when he does, he gets completely trashed and out of control. JMHO.
I was a binge drinker. I thought I was a social drinker because I didn't drink at home for a long time. But when I drink I lose control. I can't stop till I pass out. I don't think normal people drink like that. When I drink I don't know what I am going to do. I don't know where I will wake up or with who. I never drank in the morning. But I am alcoholic. It was told to me that normal people have a drink or two and get sleepy and relaxed. An alcoholic will have a drink or two and get energy and want to party and need more till its gone. That's me. Booze never relaxed me. It just made me want more.
how very true.
Hi Cas.

They say that any drug today that has an adverse affect on one in ten people will not be legalised or sold to the public. So if alcohol was only discovered recently it would not be put on the market it would be an illegal drug. As you have witnessed and I alcohol definitely has an adverse affect on more than one in ten.

Alcoholism is not about how much we drink. Its the affect it has on us. An one affect it had on me was I was unable to predict what would happen when I drank. Ill go into that another time.

I heard a story about two people one alcoholic one a social drinker .They both used to go home at the end of the day and have a couple of cans of beer. Now if one day the social drinker went home and found the fridge empty it wouldnt worry him a bit he would probably say to his wife next time you go shopping deer could you buy another carton of beer and that would be it.

But if an alcoholic went home and found no beer in the fridge his personality would be totally different his wife would become a b**** and she would be accused of drinking his beers he would probably chuck a tantrum and have to go straight out and buy more alcohol. How close to the truth do you think that is.

And binge drinkers can do a lot more damage to there bodies, because they put huge amounts of alcohol into there system in one go. Where the daily drinker builds up a tolerance. And alcohol is a poison .Cas as you said any time of the booze is an accomplishment for and alcoholic.

You know I used to think I was a social drinker once because I would drink with everyone or anyone .(lol) Have a sober 24 .God bless .

Hi Cas

Thanks for the book recommendation - i've read drinking a love story by caroline knapp - pretty good.................

Actually i've nearly finished Allen Carrs book on stopping drinking - well it's pretty good you know, i can sort of understand why people get the wrong impression of his writing but at the end of the day he does see alcoholism as a disease, one thing that stood out to me was where he talks about why it's up to the person to decide whether they're an alcoholic or not, no other disease is diagnosed by the person themselves!!! i can personally see why a person has to come to that conclusion but at the end of the day the facts are that if a person can drink loads and still appear sober that's a big sign that they will develop the disease (of course if they continue to drink!) and another fact - i think already mentioned it's also how alcohol affects you (ie personality changes - which of course can take a while) i read an experience a while ago of a man who was addicted to pain pills (so his physiology had already changed) basically he was only drinking 4 beers a day but he went to the Doctor as he FELT he was having a nervous breakdown - the doctor (a very good one at that!) told him he was not having a nervous breakdown but he was infact an alcoholic suffering from alcoholism - interesting..............

I guess the bottom line is how much a person needs to defend their own right to drink!!!! We only have to look at the safe health recommendations on booze how many of us stick to that????

Anyways you take care .....................
