Hi, everyone
The doctor said that the surgery (to remove torn cartilage and repair his ACL)went well, BUT he most definitely needed the ACL repaired (which meant they had to take tendons from other parts of the leg to repair it) and he is VERY, VERY uncomfortable. They have him on 2 (5mg) Percocets every 3 hours and an ice machine and that's keeping it at about a 7 (on a 1 to 10 scale) at best. Please keep him in your prayers during this recovery time that his pain lessens soon. Thanks so much!
Love,
Susan
Awwww, Susan I checked back in to see if ya got on.
We were all thinking of you both today.
Poor Harry. Two perc's???????? Honestly and I am an addict, Susan he sure is uncomfortable. That hurts, and that's in our opinions like two baby asprin, but well I guess that's how it has to be for now.
Sorry for going on. I got you two in my prayers. Hope that didn't sound awful. I just so truly feel for him, but mostly for you, dear Susan.

Dear Bryn,
Although it wasn't doing much for the pain, he could barely keep his eyes open so it was hitting him. I think the doctor is afraid of slowing down that breathing too much and being responsible if something would happen. He had himself down to 1 (8mg) per day. Now he's getting 8 (10mg) of Percocet. I don't know how that compares, I just know he's HURTING! I feel so bad for him!
Thanks for the prayers. Please keep them coming! He's going to try going every 4 hours through the night but I told him to call me if he needs it sooner.

Susan

Hi, everyone
Well, we both got VERY little sleep last night. I used the Percocet that was left over from my mom (expires May 2007). I asked the doctor about it first and he said it would be fine. Well, around 4:30 AM he was in UNBEARABLE pain and asked me for 3. I gave in but told him it wasn't going to be every time. I was just afraid maybe the potency wasn't there and I didn't want him having any undo agony. I ran to a 24 hour pharmacy and got it filled for the next dose. He said he could tell a difference but it still hurt considerably especially the last hour.
Unfortunately he had to go to have the drain tube removed during the hour before he was due for medication. It was good for the doctor to see the pain in his face but absolute torture for my son! I truthfully didn't know if he was going to be able to get in the van, but he needed the van to be able to keep it straight. He said it was the longest ride he ever took because his knee hurt so much from trying to get in that every bump in the road aggitated it. He said his pain was a 10 and I believe it from the anguish on his face!
When we got there, he tried a wheel chair (and he's macho man) but he couldn't do that because of the brace. He couldn't prop it level because that hurt too bad and he couldn't leave it hang down because of where the foot rests fell. He had to walk on crutches all the way to the other end of the building. When he got there, he was losing his breath again because of pain. He teared up which of course made me cry too. Thankfully, they took him in quickly because of his pain. The doctor asked how much of the Percocet he was taking and I told him he was allowing me to control it and he only got 2 every 3 hours except for that one time. He wasn't upset but didn't want him to do it all the time although I asked if he could just to get through the next 24 hours which he said should still be pretty rough. He prescribed a small dose (10 mg) flexeril to help. My son said he was one a large dose of that before and didn't think this would do much (surprise, surprise!).
He's due for his medicine in a half hour and he's not doing too badly. He said the pain is about a 7. Before it was more like an 8 or 9. Get this! The doctor told us that if he had been sent home with an IV like originally planned until they found out the insurance didn't cover it he would have had a morphine drip. I'm not sure if that would have been a good thing or not as far as the addiction is concerned but he wouldn't have been in so much pain. The thing is I told them at the time that I wanted whatever was more comfortable for him regardless of cost/insurance, and they said there would be no difference. Same medication...just taken different ways. Yeah, right! Somebody is a little/lot mixed up!
I feel really, really bad that he suffered a little more because of the medicine being near expiration and not getting the IV. He sure didn't need any extra pain!!!! Bless his heart!

Good news! He slept for 2 hours straight. Fell asleep right after he got his medicine. He's exhausted but at least he's relieved enough to rest now. Thank God!
