I am new to these boards. I am also tired and scared too, so I'm going to get straight to the questions. I've been on Suboxone, about 16 - 20 mg a day for 4 months now. I have to go for surgery. I'm supposed to go in 10 days. I have to get my Gall Bladder removed. Narcotic painkillers must be used. So,
1. What happens if they give me narcotic pain meds while I'm on Sub. Won't I go into immediate withdrawal symptoms? Will pain killers even work while on Sub? Has anyone ever done this?
2. I think I have to be off sub. How can I get off it so fast. But if I suffer through painful detox, what for? The next day the hospital will give me more narcotics. I'm thinking of stopping taking it and starting to take vicodin in prep for the surgery. So I won't be in heavy wds for the surgery. Is this a good idea?
Does anyone know anything about this? What should I do?
I wish I knew what to tell you. My first thought was to call your doctor's office that is doing the surgery and ask them or ask the doctor that is writing you sub... Good luck with your surgery,, take care! Rachel

I am glad I saw your post this morning. My hubby is on sub so I have done alot of reading on it. You need to talk to your surgeon right away.....like today. I read a post where getting anesthesia while on sub can be really dangerous. I am not sure what site I read it on......will put a link in to the site I think I saw it but it could have been on the pain pill board here really not sure. Also switching back to the vics is not the greatest idea either......
Make sure you carry something in case of emergency in your wallet with your license so that if something happens the docs will know you are on sub.

my husband is also on suboxone and he had to get surgery also DO NOT TAKE THEM BEFORE GOING UNDER,the dr. that has my husband on suboxone is the one that supplied him with oxys because she said whatever the dr. doing the surgery gives you isnt gonna be strong enough because he has been on suboxone so long so thanks to his suboxone dr. he is now eating oxys again she gave him 2000 morphine and oxys since september and believe me i am not happy with her.so ya talk to your suboxone dr. first.....GOOD LUCK
